View Full Version : Can you save an unfinished render?
coffeepenguin 08-05-2003, 06:12 PM If I'm rendering out a single frame and the total render time is going to be a couple days, and since my school wont leave the labs open twenty four hours a day, is there a way to pause it and close max then come back to it latter and have it continue rendering where it left off?

if you use brazil, than you can render in passes, rendering one pass a day, that you you dont lose everything.
You can't do it whith 3ds max scanline renderer because he still renders all the frame then he gives you the passes only after its done.

This could be a stupid way but, try and tell us the results:
- Try to make some Regions Render, starting in one corner of the picture and finishing at other...
Than you will have the complete render in parts. With Adobe Photoshop and A LOT OF WORK :) weld them.
I said this is a stupid way. :wip:

Use the "Render Region" feature - in that pulldown menu beside the render button on your toolbar. That way you can render sections of your image, save them as separate images, and then paste them together in photoshop.
Hope that helps!

Just do a screen grap (Alt+PrintScreen) to capture the half done image, and paste (CTRL+V) the sucker in to Photoshop or what ever imaging proram you prefer.

A screen grab will only work if the image you are rendering is smaller than your screen resolution (the image in your frame buffer is scaled 1:1 showing the whole image).
If it's scaled 1:2, you could zoom in first and then do screen grabs, but you'll end up with more pieces than if you do a render region.
On the Learning and Training CD, there is a maxscript called Render Net Region. This script allows you send a single image out to several systems. You could then send the image out to several systems reduding the overall time to render. It's possible that you could also specify specific regions to render and have it pick up from where it left off. I am not sure as I haven't checked it out.
Just a thought.

There's also a very slick script written that handles single-frame distributed rendering. It's called.. SNFR I do believe. Hit it up over at scriptspot.com if you're interested.

Thanks for the help, I also found out that if you cancel a render you still have the option to save what has been rendered so far by clicking the icon in the top left corner of the render window.
