Hello CGSociety,

i have a little problem with a material... And I was hoping you could help me with that.

My problem is that I have a letter, A, and I wanted to make a "shield regenerating" effect on it, I wanted some spots to appear and then grow until they get together and cover the whole A. I wanted those spots to be in light blue and a small border that has the same thickness as the spots grow. I wanted the border to get darker as it gets away from the spot.

And I have no clue how to make the border, I tried to make a cellular map and in the middle slot (default: grey) a gradient (ramp) map. But the thing is that the gradient map goes over the whole A from bottom to top and not from the spot to the end of the border...

Is there a way to solve the problem or am I totally on the wrong way?

I hope you did understand my problem, otherwise I'll try to get some pictures that may help with understanding :).

Thanks!

Try making a gradient ramp. Then change the gradient type to "mapped". Then in mapped place your cellular. Then animate the "spread" value of the cellular. And of course adjust the color of the gradient ramp to get the colors you want. That may work better for you.
