station75 08-05-2003, 11:53 AM hello

and the animation file:

Luminance won't light things up without Radiosity, I'd put some lights in there too.
Nice model, btw.

From what people have said before about heat-shimmering it's best done as a post effect, otherwise you'd probably have to use a transparent object which would slow rendering down.
Someone else will now correct me. :)

:( i don't have software like AE to do this in posteffect, :((
and i'try with transparent object (+emitter) and effect is much worse than without this...

Marcin - don't know if they sell this magazine where you are, but the next issue of Digit will include a full particle app called Particle Illusion LE which might help you with your project

You can't expect to be doing 3D animation without a compositing app. I always tell people that if they want to get into 3D animation they should get and learn a 2D animation package first. It's simply essential.
To the main question, I think you should try using a combination of volumetric and visible lights for the engine blast. Nice job so far, looking good.

i know AE nad Premiere - i can use it - but i don't have it - now i'm working as freelancer (since 2 years) and i don't have money for all soft i want to have :) - so i ask You to simulate this effect in cinema
thx i'll try the volumetrics light.
i live in Poland and sometimes polish version of papers like Digit doesn't include full version :( but thx for help both of You.
'powodzenia' - that's cool sebek :D

two parallel lights.....high brightness and custom colours...visible and noise....soft shadows...works a treat.

To create the heat distortion use a plane with 100% invisible material, high defraction, and no specular. Give it a Bhodunut Noise bumpmap, stretched in the Y direction, and animate the noise. Add a compositing tag and uncheck cast and receive shadows. You might also want to put the bump in a fusion and use a falloff mask.

AdamT is a cool idea
i'll try it later, but now i must go back to work :(
thx all of You for help.

I found the best solution of my problem (thx AdamT), a long time ago on CD Treff i found a sample scene that show how to simulate warm air. You need 3 objects:
- Metaballs
- emitter
- sphere
and material - look some post before AdamT describe that material.
put the emitter belowe metaballs and sphere below emitter, assign material to metaballs and animate.
it produce the best (i think) effect in the shortes time (of course i used the volumetric lights and glow materials too).
now i'm rendering the animation so when finish it i'll post it.
cheers

cool  that;s a pretty convincing heat effect, I'll have to remember that one, nice work :)
one thing though, how are the wings attached to the ships?

squidinc: the ship is still WIP - so wing are 'disconnected' - i haven't time to correct that :)
i think that some work on metalballs properties will enhanced possibilty of that effect. thx everyone for help.
