hey,
I made a rigged robot and a rig with a walkcyclus. now i tried to copy the geometry of the rigged robot as instances, which worked, all i did to the robots rig went over to the instances. but when i save the project and reopen it, the instances are all over the place. they moved, as a whole and also as parts of the legs and arms. only thing staying at the original place is the light i linked to the eye in it's head.
now i assume it has to do with the pivots, but i have no clue whats wrong because the original robot's pivots seems to be ok...?

besides that i would like to ask if the way i wanna have a marching army, is the right way of going about it?

That looks to me more like an application specific problem, rather than an animation problem. I'd suggest posting in the appropriate subforum.

sorry, could an admin move this to the 3ds max subforum. or should i make a copy?
i am curious if there is a general technique in going about animating marching armies...?

Are you using Biped, Bones, or C.A.T.?
Also, are you using skin, physique or are you using parent/child linking?
