Hi Everyone,

My name is Michael Feil, and I'm currently doing my HSC (final year at high school) and for my major project in Industrial Technology - Graphics I'm presenting a Lego Racer. Anyway, I have come on here to post some renders of my Lego Racer, this is because for a section of my portfolio (major work is divided up into a presentation part and a portfolio part) I must gather professional judgements on my Renders. If you make a really good critique of my renders then your response will probably included in my portfolio :)

Anyway, some responses from people who work at pixar or any other cool companies would be great

Please don't post any work in the General Discussions forum. I am moving this thread to the Gallery forum and renaming it for you. In future please post work only in the Gallery forum (for finished works) or in the WIP forum. Thanks :)

Ok, well, my first thing to say would be the movie is too large for what it is. The fps is too low and the camera goes to close to the model :D

Nice Model though.

Don't worry about the movie as much since it was just too show u guys a bit more of it.

I just want to know if u guys find it visually pleasing (shaders used, the way its rendered etc)..if there was an ad campaign and there was an animation of this ripping through the forest would it make u wanna buy it...stuff like that ?

thanx for the leigh aswel

I think your lighting is awfull. It is better to put the light aiming at the front of the object when rendering it. Especially if you want to show off the model. This is too dark.
The tires don't have enough contrast in them. You can't really see the thread in almost all the pictures.

I don't know if its the renders or not, but you seem to have faults in the yellow bricks.

Cheers

Nice!
Couple of crits. I think someone above mentioned lighting but Iam too (soz). It might be best to approach this from normal default rendering first (without any GI) then add the global Illumination afterward - I am of course making an assumption you have some GI there as your getting some nice lit shadow areas? This way you can set up your lights a little better without the overhead of waiting for GI calc.

There are tons of ways to set up lights to look like a studio shot, best and quickest one is a 3 point light system. Two lights at 45 degree angles to the object and one light in front (fill light). Drop the intensity of the front light if the brightness is too stark. Other quick set-up would be to have one point light at 45 degrees, one in front (fill light) and a 3rd at 45 degrees behind the object to get a nice back-lit highlight. In future if you wanted to know more ways of good lighting techniques have a look at studio photography books, also just take more time when you look a fashion mags or any advertising and try and see where the light source is coming from on the model/person..might give you more ideas.

After your happy with the light in a normal renderer, chuck on the GI and try and match the lighting you had set-up before. That way you are working toward a look/light that you can easily visualise. I use Mental ray in Maya and its a B*&^h to control sometimes.

One other thing to mention is that the plastic look of the truck doesn't shine enough. I'm not saying to chuck on a ultra reflective blinn but maybe just a little reflection (phong, or phong- e). If I remember my youth well enough Lego was kinda shinny.

Anyway, good luck with your HSC, I'm an Aussie myself so I sympathise

cheers.
