Hey sorry for this kind of noob question but i haven't done it in so long and can't figure out anymore how to properly achieve it.

Let's say you have a light-bulb (object) but at the same time it's emitting light, you see it glowing but also all the details of texture on the bulb's glass.

What's the first step in assigning the object as light, how do you do that? I tried to look up in help but couldn't find the proper section.

Then how can you make it glow but at the same time have the details of the glass not be completely covered by the glow as with a real bulb?

Thanks

Sounds like a job for a tonemapper :)

You can apply an incandescent material on your bulb or whatever self-illuminated but at some point if you want it to emit light properly you may need to crank up the intensity, making it really bright ( even burned ).

Your eyes in the real life can locally adapt to the luminosity of the bulb and show you the details ( depending it's intensity though ), but a DSLR would need you to underexpose a lot to catch them.

So If you still want to have that effect in XSI, I think you need to either use a Tonemapper to compress the highlights or / and render in 32 bit and compress them in post.

Damn, the CTRL Geolights only works in Maya it says on that page?

EDIT: Sorry nevermind, the "Maya only" was just for the download location as there is the XSI version.
