CGTalk - "Repairing" an edge loop? (How do I rescue this mesh?)

Hi, this is probably a newbie question, but here goes!

I've started modeling a car, and somehow I ended up with a couple triangular poly's. Specifically, I have an edge loop that I'd like to have running around the entire car.

I did a couple "join average" of the vertices, so that's what messed it up.

Here's what happens when I double-click the desired loop now.

Here's the edge loop I really want (In other words, I'd like to get this selection by double-clicking it.)

I'm guessing that if I was to get rid of the triangles by adding an additional vertex and drawing one of the two edges to that... though I'm not sure if that would really "repair" the loop.

Also, I'm not sure how to go about actually adding an extra vertex along the edge. I know beveling the point doesn't work... And I tried the "New Vertex" command under the "Vertex" menu, and it doesn't seem to do anything.

So I feel pretty much stuck now. Is it fixable or would it be best if I just started over?
