View Full Version : Biped to Bones??
Nenox 08-04-2003, 11:07 PM I have been supplied with a character for animation in characterstudio. I would rather animate in Maya, but Kaydaras FBX format does not support exporting CS to Maya. Exporting a standard Max skinned character seems to be no problem though.
Is it possible to convert the Biped to Max Bones, and keep the skinning ect.?? I don't mind having to re-rig the character in Maya.
Thanks in advance,
Nenox.

I was able to get Biped to export to FBX from 3ds max. Been a long time though, can't recall the specifics. But it was Biped for sure (mocap animation). Maybe check the docs again?

I know that Kaydara has a downloadable plugin at their knowledge base which will allow conversion from 3DS Max to FBX or filmbox format. Once converted, it should carry over to Maya and then into MotionBuilder. I do know that the character must be facing in the Positive X direction for them to convert properly. I am a newbie to all of this, so if this doesn't apply, please forgive me. Hope it helps.

Hi guys.
Thanks for your surgestions. Biped characters seems to import fine into Motion Builder. The problem is that Maya does not import it correctely. I've tried to Export Fbx from Max, import into motion builder, export from motion builder and then import that file into Maya, but I get the same bad result as when going directely from Max to Maya.
Anyone else??
Cheers,
Nenox.

Ask on the Kaydara forums. I bet someone can help you get it done.
EDIT: I mean Kaydara's site forum as opposed to the MotionBuilder/Messiah conference here.

Only thing on the Sparks downloads that I can think of coming close is the Physique to Skin Converter...
http://sparks.discreet.com/downloads/downloadshome.cfm?f=2&wf_id=66
Or else the Game Exporter Interface...

One option you could try is to export from Max as FBX, then import the FBX to max, then re-export to FBX and import into Maya. Perhaps that might "clean" the file completely of any Biped references...?

Review this article in Kaydara Knowledge Desk against the steps you are currently using.

Hi. Thanks again.
I tried exporting from max and then importing to and exporting from max again, before importing into maya.. that did the trick. Well allmost. FBX does not support other than rigid deformations, when exporting a model skinned with physique at least, so I was not able to get the weighting across. Anyway, I guess I will just reskin it in Maya, should be a lot less hastle by now!
Cheers everyone,
Nenox
