View Full Version : Just some barrels
MikeyFriel 08-19-2009, 08:41 PM Hey all,
Been following this site for a while and thought i would create something for my first post, so created some barrels in 3ds max and photoshop. Textures and bump maps still need a bit of work.

A proper render with some lighting would work wonders for this model.
My main beef with the model is its' texture, it looks too much like concrete. Try to find out what happens to metal when it decays and becomes old.

It feel like you just took a couple of photos/textures and applied them as blending modes. What I mean is there isn't a lot of thought put into the textures themselves.
For example, pretend that the barrels were stacked on their sides in the truck that brought them there, then rolled along the ground because the people who moved them were lazy. That would leave scratches and scrapes on the protuding edges. Rust and grime that dripped down the sides would pool around the ridges. Maybe one of them fell out of the truck and smashed up the top ridge and had a huge dent in the side. Stuff like that is what makes the prop believable.
Plus it does look like concrete, I would start over on the metal texture, and it also needs a good spec map to make it look like metal.

If this is for a game engine you could reduce the poly count by removing some edges on the metal bands. They add very little to the silhouette, you could just use a normal map to get the same detail. I also agree that it looks like concrete. There a quite a few tutorials that would help with the texturing, like this one. thanx
