I was interested in getting some critiques on this model, She is supposed to be 20ish. Stylized figure. some things to keep in mind.

click to see a qt vr turn around of her (about 500k)

the really defined cheekbones make her look MUCH older than i think you intened, and the fingernails dont seem to be that good, looks like she dipped her fingers into paint.

the shape of the legs look good front head on, but not from the sides, the knee shouldn't bend to the back that much, possibly more of a hinge is needed on the knee.,.,
in the back of her hair, it seems to need more curvature, right now it looks a lot like lego hair,..,
and i definitly agree with hobbes.,., the sharp lines defining the cheeck bones and how they follow into the chin make her look a little old.,.,

but i do like you extreme swooping shapes, creating a nice exagerated style.,,..,

Here are more shot of her from various angles

Oh I was aiming for her to be like 20ish. So the info on the cheeks will help make her younger.

Thanks

I agree with the others, you need to work more on the face. For me it seems that she's around 35. Make her cheeks softer, as well as the jaws. The fingernails as someone said, don't look good. Everything else is great IMO. I love her butt and her Gstring.. looks funny and sexy. I would love to see her animated! :D

Ok, cool,

I'll work on the fixes today.

Do i post the fixes here or start a wip thread and post the final update here for more reviews?

Thanks,

Jason

I guess you can post them here, it won't take long since the model is 'almost there'. Great work..

Just some thoughts on making her face look younger...

The difference between young faces and old faces are two areas: the skin and the flesh beneath the skin. Since the skull never really changes shape after puberty, age shows in the face because of greater definition due to fat loss -- "baby" fat eventually goes away and makes the face look more bony. The bones of the skull protrude more, which makes sharper shapes and harder creases. Also, the skin, as we all know from makeup commercials, loses elasticity and tends to form wrinkles and stress lines, especially in areas of frequent movement like the eyes and mouth.

To make your face look younger, try to round out the sharp bones of her chin and cheeks -- but don't shrink the bones themselves (unless you want to change her style) as youth comes not from smaller bones but from more padding around the bones. Try filling in the hollows under her cheekbones and in the crease between her cheek and her nose/mouth. Also, try smoothing out the transition from her cheekbone to her ear/rear jaw, this hollow also says "old" to me. You could also put some padding in her jawline, especially at the back by the ear, and make this curve less pointy.

I'd also look at her eyebrow shape -- although I realize this is a stylized person, perhaps the perfection of the teardrop shape lends itself to suggesting she is older, and therefore needs to pluck and shape her eyebrows. Not sure about this, it's sorta subconscious...

I was thinking at first that the slight creases around her eyes also made her look old, but in reality I think those are pretty normal.

Hope that helps :)

Here is the head. She looks really young here.

The three pictures are the original head. the semi smooth head and the totally tricked out head.

The last head I added an additional edge to the lips to shape them better. Top lip i just tweaked. The jaw and neck i just tweaked until smooth. I also was bothered by the muzzle area of the face so i loaded up a pic of a face and used that as a guide to shift the jaw & nose up. I also added nostrals while i was doing so much work on her. I also repositioned the eyebrows to be along the edge of the brow line.

Wow, much better! I didn't realize how out of proportion the face was until you made these changes. Also you shortened the neck, good call.

Now I would like to see her animated :)

One of my suggestions would be to change the eyelashes. Spend more time on them and give them different levels of length and shade as it passes along the eye line.

thanks everyone

I am working on the hair some more but since I've never done hair before it may take a few revisions to get it to a point i like.

There is also the growing problem that she is becoming less stylized and the solid colored hair may no longer work.

Well we'll see.

It is an output format of Lightwave. If you are using LW go to the render tab and under animation you pick quicktime vr. I set it so she does a full 360 turn in 48 frames (really 12-24 looks fine but I put in the blinks so used extra frames)

The options for it are set to
pan frames: # of frames.
start and ending pan: 0 -360
Tilt I set to 1 (but you can set it up so you can rotate figure up and down as well as around)
start and end tilt set to 0.

The manual tells you how to do some more advanced stuff like full tilts.

I have no idea how you would do it outside of lw.

A small note on qt vr. since it is just a clever way of displaying images non sequencially from a movie format you can do other things with it besides turn arounds.

I'll post some fun stuff once I get this damn hair to look right. I've done 3 versions so far and they all suck. Will try some more today.

head shape improvements look good ...

remember that with styalised characters like this that there is an expectation of looks from decades of Disney characters. THere are some standard things you can do to make the character yound and alluring:

Make the eyes larger.
Move the eyes down -- conversly make the forhead larger. THis makes the character look much younger and cuter.

For a reference for heads always go to www.FaceGen.com and download the free demo version of the FaceGen head modeller (it runs standalone so it's 3D platform agnostic).

Thanks for the link. The reference is very useful.

I'll try playing with the eyes. I want her young but not teenager young. Maybe just pull the hair back or shorten it. The hair line is all wrong anyway.

I'll finish up the hair and go from there.

Okay here is her new hair part 1.

Not sure this is going in the right direction.

I slightly reshaped the head to make the forehead a little better, but mostly I just pulled the hair back. The original hair is completely off. The hairline is way up at the midpoint of the curve of the skull from front to top. The old hair is coming out the middle of the forehead. So it is an inch or more too far down.

Anyway I'll continue to make updates. Just wanted to show you were I am so far.

Hair and head progression. (http://www.byjason.com/media/dom3.jpg)

wow you've managed to eliminate that 60 year old look that was being caused by the jaw sharpness. I personally like the black haired punk version much better than the red hair short look. The version to the far left I say lose all together as it still looks like a 60 year old woman.

wow, been really busy but finally got a chance to do some updates. basically I finished the hair and started the texturing. Yeah I went for a more anime/Aeon Flux kind of fun hair style. Not sure if it works with the clothing she is wearing but maybe a color change will help? So far hair and jeans are textured. (shirt always was)

wow man really cool, i am sooo diggin the hair. reminds me of the blonde chic from blue that animae on Cartoon network about giant bugs taking over the earth. i like her curves smooth lines and she has a nice face. actually from the front she has a very pretty face but from the profile to 3/4 she looks almsot mean or bitter.....
i think her face extends to far out id pull it back some there too much space betwwen the ear and the face features. it feels as though shes over extndeing her face. body is kick ass and its a nice job all in all.

The turn around is a 1.2MB quicktime movie.

Still have to fix the pants image the seems need a stitch pattern or something to make a more natural break.

I also gave her corrected ears since the old ones the anatomy was off.

It is done in lightwave. Not sure what other software has it as a render saving option.

it's Pauline Hanson! soz to all the non australians that dont know who that is. She looks much too old, the black haired version seems to be only a slight improvement

looks great!:) one thing though, the line between her ears and jaw shouldn't be there, should be way smoother (al least upwards). Also maybe you could redo the eyelashes, keeping them as strong and "cartoony/stylised" but divided. Further I'm not sure about the hello kitty print, maybe you could do a design yourself to make it more of your own.(also maybe it's just a bit tooo cute, she's a bit more stylish)
For the rest shes great, great lines. Keep going! ;)

I fixed the line in front of the ear as best I could but the mesh is so stretched in that area I am not able to completely remove it. Not sure how to redo the mesh to get it in check. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

http://www.byjason.com/media/dominique-ear-wire.gif

I also removed those eyelashes and gave her some real ones. They look better but need to be shaped a little more.

The face is in a pose, hence the expression. Wanted to make sure the lashes moves with the lids
