Just finished this speed of a desert, gotta keep going to improve, Im fairly happy with the color choice but Ive gotta do better with mountains, tips and crit much appreciated.

Looking at it now though, the colors seem a bit washed out, not enough contrast:(
Oh well, on to my next sketch.

Some value and color studies, both very quick, bout 20-30 mins respectively, I really love urban environments, especially when loosely drawn, hopefully I will have a finished piece based on just such a premise soon, but for now, back to work!!!

Nice one, it's great you do these studies aswell ;)
One little advise, I would recommend more to focus on shapes and proportions. It's painfull and boring for me I must admit, but most rewarding (as seems to be usuall with many things (: ) Go and grab soft pencil and sketch from http://posemaniacs.com/ or http://characterdesigns.com/
All the skin tones, shades and such nicely fit into the form you sketch first. If you haven't strong sense of human form (like me), you prolly fail at shading, but that's not the shading problem really, it's the problem of drawing underneath. I had hard time to realize this, I thought like if I want to be a good painter I have to stay loose and forget all those line drawing tutorials. Heh, that's actually true, but once I master them I can get step further with painting, not sooner. But, it's good to combine it, but just know what is the real problem when something fail.
You are on a good way buddy, keep doing ;)

hey outlaw! :D i thought i start posting here as well so here i am lol

nice work on those sketches! i really like the bw ones with the snow, and that scrapeyard has a really nice feel of ut2004 in it :P
overall i suggest you could try out some little shape and form practices, like you know little compositioning thumbs with black and white shapes on it. you will gain a better feeling for the space you're working in, and also learn the impact of certain forms on a picture.
also a little reminder on the values, having an bw-adjustment layer on top of the picture can become really handy for an occasionally quick value-check :)

keep it up and 'them' coming!

outlaw, you asked about the composition in the above piece, there's a quick fix to fix that... Just get the staircase back into your composition, which means if people were walking it they wouldn't entirely walk out of the picture, hence you get action back into your piece.

Quick 5 minute overpaint to show what I am talking about. :)

Hey there man, these are good speedpaints. How long is each one taking you, roughly?

One thing to work on is texture work. Right now it seems like a lot of the texture comes from brushes specifically for texture, to just add some noise and break up the surface, and then it gets painted over or pushed around a bit. Try and let your texture come only from the brush strokes that are contributing to the painting as a whole, the same ones that give you your shapes, your lighting, your shadows. I feel like it might help make them pop out quite a bit more.

I notice this probably because it's a major problem I was having in my own work over these past few months. :P

Great one dude! And if you feel you are too slow, that's the problem with thinking, not the speed itself ;)
Anyway, there is definitely at least one cure to this, leave the unnecessary. If that is a car study, leave the background. Very similar happens to me, the elephant for example few posts before. I should have leave the background been and just pick something I can really concentrate enough to. In few more car posts I plan to do just thumbnails of original pictures. For example headlights, wheel, whatever, just make it correct.
OK, keep up dude

Great stuff, I dig the two musician pieces on the previous page. I like the stark gritty rendition :)
