View Full Version : Mountains WiP (Assistance Appreciated)
JMurder 08-18-2009, 10:00 PM I'm trying to get some practice into mountains and vegetation in concept art. I can't seem to get vegetation right and any assistance provided would be truly a big help.

I typically look at other peoples "rough" concept work and try to see how they did it what ever it is I am trying to do, after I have looked around enough I will try and emulate a few. of the best or most ideal styles.
I will also be terrible and recommend you take a look at this for an idea on how to do vegetation.

It's looking good so far, though it is not really developed enough for me to really say anything about it at this point in time. So I will stand by my statement above and just say look around at concept works that catch your eye and study them, and if you are feeling brave enough ask the artist if s/he would be willing to give you a quick rundown on how they do things.

Thanks, Valtyr, for the those links and your help. I'm more than sure that they will help me in developing this.
Maybe I will ask an artist how she/he does things. There is a person that I am sure will help me out.
Thanks again. :buttrock:

you got the nice idea of having less contast as the montains go back, when two montains line overlap I would make the tone of mountain in behind closer to the background so it pushes the closer mountain much more front.
for vegetaion, try using a round brush and put it on scattering on .
I am keep on posting some small video tutrials here.I will update evry week.
good luck

I would recommend gathering as much reference as you can before you start painting any vegetation. From the look of your mountain that you have so far it looks like something you'd find on the Li River - try searching that on google to get some reference.
Good luck!

Your silhouettes of your mountains are great. Your value scale is wonderful. You got that spot on. I'd recommend getting pictures. LOTS AND LOTS of pictures of both rock formations and vegetation. I'd personally tackle the rock details first before going onto the greenery, but whichever one you want, is fine. But pictures are your friends. Greenery from imagination is tough. Also, don't forget that along with your greenery comes value. Your greenery's saturation should match that of your rocks. :) It's looking good though.

Thanks to all of you for the advice and the bit of critique.
I've got a further progress for you guys to advise me on. I know I got ahead of myself by putting the lighting from the sun over the distant mountains, but I put it on a layer I called "Meh". So I will most likely delete it.
And... hit it!

I like the idea of the sun but you really need to make it pop. If you were looking through a camera, the rays from the sun would be really sharp and would probably add a lens flare. I don't like lens flares in paintings, but you should add some really sharp rays as well as the ambient glow from the sun. But I like the effect it makes. And I'm sure you can do better and since this was kind of a test I'm not going to really reprimand you for the quality of it but I think it's a good addition. :)

What I can suggest for the vegetation and not only, is to start painting with mute colors (less saturation) and bring saturation up gradually.
Also the color you used there is a cyan-green which is not right...The best thing to do if you don't know colors by heart is to pick a photograph similar to what you wanna do and then sample colors from it ;)
