These challenges are great, it's cool to see lots of eyecandy from talented people!

I'm the kind of guy who thinks that a messy 2 minute doodle can be the most beautiful concept in the world, and I even work that way, my storyboards seem unclear and horrible to others, my sketches are meant for my eyes only, so I don't feel very comfortable showing that stuff.. but I do have something to show:

A render (nowhere near the final, only a test), 3 omni lights, no GI (too slow, I don't like waiting), render time was 1-2 minutes with the crappy 10 minute environment:

http://www.mbnet.fi/~badgers/gallery/insect_render_1.jpg

And some of the textures (there's seven different versions of each texture: colour, bump, diffusion, specular, specular colour, glossiness, last but not least, displacement):

Lovely detail! Only crit would be the eye, it seems a little like a mapped sphere. If it isn't already, model the eye properly, with an iris, cornea etc. It will add a lot. If it IS modeled, then ... eh... sorry :)

Love your artwork btw, really beautiful paintings.

Hyvää something artwork something :)

wow, really good progression from model to finished texture. I thought i saw some peoples art grow around here, but nothing on the scale of your model. I mean at first i thought it wasn't going to be all that good and i'm sorry if i've mentioned failure in the past, you've really pulled through in the end. The color variation is excellent. so is the detail.

good work.

Just awesome! The only crit is (like mentioned above) the eye that looks a bit flat.. Five stars.

That's some awsome work you got there ;) ...is there a chance to see a wireframe version of the model ? I'm just interested how much of the details were done with displacement textures.

btw....love your paintings as well :)

Wow, great feedback everybody, you're the reason why I'm still working on this thing (and it's only 6 am haha)!! Thanks for the inpiration boost!!

Urgaffel: I hoped nobody wouldn't notice the sphere eye hehe, even the highlight is painted.. I'll model it properly when the other parts are finished. Tack så mycket! (Swedish was and still is mandatory at school here :)

Rv_el, tkay, Leigh, Oz, Mike Pauza: I'm very glad you like it, btw. this is the first time my thread gets rated, and with five stars!! I'm so happy!

Thoth: Even with Max's ugly (and slow) displacements you can get quite good results, but if you have more than 2 (three at most) iterations the render times will be long for stills, too long for animation.

This is how I built the model: it was made poly by poly and the polygon edges follow precisely the darkest and brightest parts of the diplacement map (I made the texture first), it bumps the mesh only from the right places.. the biggest weakness is that you cannot make complex models this way, the mesh would look horrible, there's no edgeloops, so one would animate it.

You don't need 2,4 Mhz Pentium 4 for simple models like this insect and I, for example, don't have a super fast computer and it tends to get very slow with highly detailed models, I like to do the detailing with textures and low-poly models are faster to animate.

Luigi: I will post the progress shots after I've made the last render. Do you want see the progression of the model (though there's not much to see in the model, because it was built poly by poly) or the progression of the textures?

Here's a bit older render to make the wait feel shorter, I'll post the wireframe and other stuff when I wake up, and the final pic same time tomorrow :) :

Aha! I knew it! These old eyes can spot fake eyes a mile away ;)

I'm trying to learn finnish, got half of all my realtives over there, Turku and Salo area mostly. Then I have a few in Hellsinki and all over finland now that I think of it :) Someday I'll be able to carry a conversation in finnish! Someday!

Off to bed with me...

(please, check my challenge thread, I'd value your opinion :)

It's awesome. I would definately like to see the process you went through to create that, it sounds very unique. Capital job. Bravo.

Well, just got out off my swedish lesson ....we had a word test (don't know if i should cry or laugh:p )

Anyway, Timo, i hope you get your hands on renderman ...displacements should be top notch then ;)

Thanks for all the great comments!! Keep them coming, me loves deadlines and pressures, I won't rest until this fellow is complete :)

Urgaffel: Hey it's cool that you are trying to learn Finnish, I guess the day when you can talk Finnish is the day when I forgot how to speak it (hopefully) haha. This country is NOT the place to be if you're dreaming of a career as an artist, another thing I don't like is that the Finnish media is ready to take all the credits for your success if you'll be famous someday... movie director Renny Harlin for an example. I'll take a look at your thread after I've finished painting the sky texture.

Gilgamesh, Iguiniz.X. and Luigi: I Hope you enjoy this:

http://www.mbnet.fi/~badgers/gallery/progress.jpg

Thoth: Swedish isn't hard to learn if you can speak English, they've very much in common. Can you guess what I want next Christmas? Own little Renderman, yes oh yes =) err.. wait a second, seeing Lotr 2 would be even better!

Leigh, Thank you again :)

New sky, though the creature fills most of it (it took 1,5 hours to paint!! hehe), a lot of tweaking, changed the eye a bit and added some fog.. this should do it for now, I call this temporarily finished :) :

Ser mycket trevligt ut.
Kul med lite nordbor på sajten.

I like your work. Should be interesting, just for reference to see some brighter images of him. Just to see the texture. It looks great but so much of the work disappears in the dark lighting.
But you do have a sense for lighting I can tell.

Nice to see other lizard/dragon like creatures that add something new to the genre.
I´m doing a dragon myself right now. Therefore I do look more closely on those characters when I find them.

Excellent................5 Stars. I do not just give 5 stars out for the sake of it either. I love the depth and overall color and lighting. Just beautiful. Thanks for the fun and educational look into your creation. :)
