View Full Version : wip: Lotus Elise
c4dportal 08-04-2003, 05:38 PM My first car and it's going to be my first completed project in cinema 4d. It's been trail and error on this one and I still have to do allot.
Plan to model most of the interior. The exterior is almost complete with some micro bumps here and there which i will fix later on (sick of shifting points around). So far no triangles :)

I do panel seperation by simply copying points and starting the next panel..so each part is modelled with the ''edge'' points of its neighbouring part. When every panel is complete I judge if the make thicker plugin can be used or if i have to copy points inwards and bridge them.

Which panel do you start with first? Which is the best one to start with?

I started out with the hood. When that shape is perfect you can build most parts around that such as the front bumper and side panels. From there I started working on the side (doors) and on to the back bumper. I did the roof last. Details such as windows and side fenders last as well.

so thats how its done :) ive always wanted to know how this pannel seperation is done, thanx for sharing your techniques with us, much appreciated, by the way i have to say for your very first attemt at a car i think its is looking superb, cant wait to c the finished version.

I'm still not happy about the side fender. I've been trying three times over to get that correct, but it's the hardest part yet.
I chose the wrong car to start with for sure, but it turned out pretty good I think.
Thanks for the comments guys :)

The paint looks very nice but two things scream out at me firstly the grill jus doesn't look right although I think this is a ligting problem also the specular is too high on the tyres make it lower and wider with a hint of noise.:applause:
c4dportal

U are right about the tyres..I personally think the sides of the tyre are too ehhm..vertical ;) and yes it needs some noise. I will work on the grills as well. Have slapped on a quick texture for that one.
I plan to get better seats (leather effect with slight ripples in it).
Thanks for the comment :)

Looking really good!
I would prefer you to do a little more smoothing in some of the bends and joints. Seems to be a little bumpy. I can also see some of the polys rearing their heads in a few places like the edges of the holes in the hood.
Great!
nice job with this. and good render. lotus elise are one of my favorite cars. i wish the US would produce these over here.

could you describe this wesware?
"I can also see some of the polys rearing their heads in a few places like the edges of the holes in the hood."
What is rearing their heads. Would love to fix it of course, but what should I be looking for in this case.
wesware

Sure!
Oops, "rearing their heads" just means "showing up"
Here is an image of what I am talking about. The circles show where the polys are being stretched to much and might need a higher Hypernurb setting or some subdivision.
The red arrow shows where some of the mesh might get too thin but that may just be my preference.
Hope that helps.
Great model!

Thanks for explaining Wesware! Yeah, I see what you mean. I'm currently adding more geometry to the hood to prevent too much stretching. It seems allot smoother now.
Glad you like the model :).

New render
http://129.125.101.174/elisef.jpg
rebuilt part of the bumper and the hood (deleted some triangles, more detailing, fixed some bumps) + trying out a paint shader created by slouchcorp.
c&c welcome.

Thanks Thirdeye.
Your comment means a great deal 2 me, coming from the 3d car master himself.
Slouch and I have been trying to get the shader right using your cars as an example :). Still some tweaking to do, but getting there.

yes it's green, but that's just an awfull colour for a car if you ask me ;)
Final colour may be black or red. Can always render both colours of course.

It's the most basic material on the car. Color channel, reflection (100 %), enviroment (multiply 60 % mix) kitchen hdri probe, specular (plastic, 95% -> 20 % -> -40% ->20%).
Used a B&W hdri map on a sphere, compositing tag seen by rays, seen by gi and 9 light setup for enviroment.
I think your issue is an insufficient lighting setup rather than a bad material. Try different lighting setups. I'm sure one will hit the spot :)

Can you tell us where you got the paint shader from slouchcorp?
the material looks awesome, which I assume is partially because of the lighting, but I love studying the shaders that look good to better understand how these things work.
The car, imho, looks simply wonderful.

by spending a few days with tel trying everything we could think to get a good paint, its just one of thoes things that needs a lot of testing, we looked at thirdeyes cars as a look we wished to emulate.
havent acchived that yet but we will. once we do we will no doubt do a tute for it.
untill then keep playing and use the enviroment channel.
Mike.

Working on a new tire. Still some details to be added (track rod, steering tie rod, wishbone and top wishbone + joint). The rest won't be visible so I will not bother with those details.
Sharp edge of the tire itself will be fixed once I have stitch and sew..need to weld a ''couple'' of points :)
Texturing will be improved as well.
