Is there anyway to export .3ds from Maya5?

I looked for a plugin at Highend and did a search here and all I see is importing.

I have to export .3ds because I need to nomalize and map in a differant program for export to .mts
Its called ZModeler,so I need to export from Maya .3ds so ZModeler can import it.

I could install Lightwave and .obj export from Maya then export from Lightwave to .3ds but just exporting from Maya .3ds would be easier.

Thanks for any help with this.

I think you're out of luck with the 3ds option. If someone knows better then let me know, but I'm pretty sure that there is no 3ds export for maya.

if you could get it into maya 4 or 4.5 you would be okay. a|w has a 3ds exporter for those versions, however they haven't released one for maya 5 as of yet. or if you could get it into max you could export it as a .3ds that way if you have a max .obj importer which discreet made for previous versions of max. not sure if they made one for max 5 though. these damn companies need to have all the import/export types they can get and they oughtta come with the friggen' app. it's always bugged me with these format wars. you could use something like polytrans but that again costs money.

Kaydara.com. Their FBX format is interchangable from different 3d packages.

Ok,thanks guys.

Well it does bother me also.
At least they could do is all be able to import/export .3ds/.obj/.lwo/.c4d and whatever format softimage then at least all the major apps would be able to trade.

Thanks again.

Okino has a rather snazzy bit of kit available called PolyTrans which will let you import your .lwo and .lws files amongst a host of others.

It's priced somewhere around the $800 USD mark which considering what it does is pretty sweet. Only really useful if you are doing a lot of back and forth work between packages; for a couple of lightwave models you're better off just exporting them as .obj files

It supports a bunch of formats, here's the list (http://www.okino.com/conv/filefrmt.htm).

And here's the product homepage.

PolyTrans for Maya (http://www.okino.com/conv/pt4maya.htm).

The .3ds exporter is in the Bonus games plugins set on alias's site. I came out when maya 5 shipped.

I have the bonus tools but didnt reinstall the game tools.
I will look around A/W and see what I can come up with.
If I rememmber the Game Tools, only a few didnt work under 5.0 so I will try that.

EDIT: Well...I just went through every plugin remotely involving export and I still see nothing........

I just remembered that the alias plugin was a 3ds import, not export. My bad. Try dxf or obj.

whoosh is right.. you could use fbx... get it from kaydara.com.. There's a link on their homepage for their exporter/importer plugs.

Of if you want to purchase a program. I really enjoy Deep Exploration from Right Hemisphere. It does conversions too.

Okino is an excellent choice. Very stable: I used it a lot for heavy duty OpenFlight<->Max translations. Sort of expensive though...

Well I just need something to export a mesh as .3ds.
No texture,no normals,no mapping just mesh.
Although all that would be nice.
