View Full Version : Sketchbook Thread of Mindbendermind
mindbendermind 08-16-2009, 07:49 PM As I love doing master studies and over and over again find myself returning to figurative drawing, I thought I'd start a sketchbook thread here.
Just found that marvellous "50 heads in a month" thread and am currently printing the first master work to draw. Starting today this first workshop will last until September 16th for me.
Grateful for any feedback that can help me improve my figure drawing. Looking forward to getting to know others here. Seems to be an encouraging and inspiring site.
Well, enough talk...time to draw.
First post is a quick pen sketch from life I did this morning:

Hi,
nice sb :)
I think you need to practice the control of your linework a bit more.
A great exercise is to do some sketches while being as economic as you can with your linework.
A good rule is 3 seconds observation, 1 line, 3seconds observations, 1 line, etc.
Make lots of gesture sketches... lots and lots and lots, every day
In 10 minutes, you can make 10 gesture sketches, or even 20 :)

Hi and thanks a lot for the advices. Will definitely try that "observe-observe-observe-draw"-approach. :)
Here's a female martial artist from the other day (pencil, HB):

Some master studies I've drawn from Hale recently.
First a Fuseli, then beginning of a Carracci and finally a Raphael study:

Have decided to focus on my unreferenced figure drawing for a while, since it's such a gap between my figure studies and figure drawing from my mind.
This has lead me to focus on studies, while unref figure drawing is what I really need to spend more time on.
Happy for any feedback/book recommendations or advice that can make my unreffed figures look better
(currently studying Bridgman and Hamm as main figure-drawing sources. Have Loomis as well.)

I'd say don't split the head of your character with that mountain edge.
What is your character doing? Is it dancing? Meditating?
Is it standing with the back towards the viewer? Why? Perhaps show a bit of the face at least so the viewer can identify with the character more easily?

Thanks a lot for your latest comment,
haven't been posting here for a loong while. Finished the quick image (not one of my favorites), you can see it here if curious:
jamabu.daportfolio.com (http://jamabu.daportfolio.com) (under "digital art")
Time to post again though, have begun drawing and painting a lot from photo refs lately (Scalera's "People and Poses" as well as the "Anatomy for artist's" series.
Here's the latest WIP of my most recent life-drawing:
