Thanks! I read somewhere that the hotkey was "." , but I didn't think to try the numpad. I just kept pressing the regular "." this will save me loads of time!

In addition to the numeric period key, try the numeric forward slash </> key. This will hide all the other objects, center the view on your selected object, and show your object in local view, which is a great way to focus working on a single object. You may have to zoom out a bit, though. To return to global mode, press the </> key a second time. (menu: View-->Local View / Global View)

And you can test render just that single object. (for some reason after rendering local mode shows the rest of the scene again - just hit the </> key twice to return to local mode.

This view mode reminds me a bit of Lightwave's modeler.

I didn't know about / and really Isolation mode is essential. I was doing it placing the objects in layers and making only visible one.

You might want to check out my Time-Saving Tips tutorials. They demonstrate many helpful things that aren't so obvious in Blender.

When you work with Blender, you can still very-definitely see the influence of the real world video production studio that first created it for their it-pays-the-bills work. Before I found some of the "time saving tips," I found myself discovering things about the product just from having mashed a key accidentally. Once I figured out again which key I had just mashed, I sometimes found myself saying, "gee, that's cool ..."

(And of course, sometimes not. :) )
