View Full Version : Creating Seamless Textures.
raymondo 08-04-2003, 06:51 AM I've been programming, playing around with max and photoshop for quite some time, but one thing that still busts my brain is creating seamless textures for use in (specifically for) Hammer Editor (Worldcraft).
I'm interested in creating a good sized texture .wad of walls, floors, ceilings and the like, which I can use on my buildings in worldcraft, which I can then add into the 3D engine I am currently using.
How the heck do I go about creating a seamless texture!? I have no idea where to start!
Here are a few images that I want to add to my wad for starters:
Example 1 (http://members.shaw.ca/ray1493/floor1.jpg) Example 2 (http://members.shaw.ca/ray1493/floor2.jpg) Example 3 (http://members.shaw.ca/ray1493/ground2.jpg) Example 4 (http://members.shaw.ca/ray1493/wall1.bmp)
Obviously they need to be resized to a multiple of 2 (max 512 for my engine)
Can someone please offer some insight?
This is so frustrating when you cant get it right.:annoyed:

I find it pretty easy to tile textures in Photoshop.
The basics:
1) First, crop/scale to your final size (512? Up to you.).
2) Then go to the Filter menu, then Other, then Offset.
3) Set H and V to be half your image H/W, click on Wrap Around, OK.
4) Clone/paint out the obvious seams.
5) Now fix any new seams you may have created... Offset again, but this time set H to 0. This will let you see any new seam on the vertical edge. Fix it if so. Offset again to return, then offset with W set to 0 and H set to half-image-height. Fix the horizontal seam if it exists. Finally, offset again to get back to where you first started (if you want, not needed really).
A great texture-tiling tutorial, lots more in-depth info...

Some freebie tiling plugins for Photoshop. I use Half Wrap, a shortcut for step 3, all the time. The other filters are mostly a waste of time...

If you want, there are a bunch of free (permission or credits required) wad-style textures available for game use:

Another good idea is to paint or clone stamp over anything that stands out too much, any areas of great contrast repeating on a tiled texture will look nasty.

Great guys, thanks so much for your help.
My textures look great now! bwahahahhahaha.:D
Now I'm having problems in worldcraft :argh:
Whenever I apply my nice new textures, of which are all 512x512, they seem warped when I view them in worldcraft. They seem too big. all the little parts of the texture are blown out of purportion.
Any ideas on what might help? Worldcraft streches and sizes my textures very oddly, so they look pretty crappy.
Worldcraft specific texturing tutorials would be great.
Thanks.

Post a query here. Lots of WC users I think.
