View Full Version : Edit--> paste in original location?
Zirngibism 08-14-2009, 09:50 PM Ok, this has always annoyed me in Photoshop.
Why is it that when I copy a layer (or drag it in from a separate document), the copy shows up on a seemingly random place when pasted?
Is there a way to edit-paste where the layer you paste in has the same position with respect to the upper left corner as the layer was when it was copied?
Sure, there's ctrl+j to duplicate a layer without the copy budging, but what if you're trying to drag one in from a different document? Say I have two documents, and each are 2,000 X 3,000 pixels. I want to drag in an adjustment layer with a mask on it from Document A. When it gets into Document B, it's all out of place and moving it can be a pain on the workflow.
Why can't PS position the dragged-in layer with some respect to its original position?
Is there some kind of function I'm missing here?
Thanks.

Hold down the shift key while dragging?

What I usually do if I have transparency all over is make a small paint dot in the corner of the image (so it looks like a quarter pie slice) first, then drag from one document to the other. When it's in the new document you can use that corner to snap it into place, then erase the paint dot when you're finished.

If you want to copy an adjustment layer from one document to another, control click on that layer and choose Duplicate Layer. Then in the pop up window, choose your other document as your Destination and click OK.

Thanks for the tips so far!
But what about pasting something within the same document?
I can think of a workaround like selecting all, making a new document, shift-dragging the selected piece into the new document, then shift-dragging it again back from the new document into the original again.
Hmmm, I guess maybe I could try making an action for that...

Let me see if I understand what you want....you're looking for a way to create an exact duplicate of something within the same document at the same location as the original? That would be something that the previously-mentioned CTRL+J (New Layer via Copy) would achieve. Either select what you want to duplicate/copy or just leave everything unselected to duplicate the whole layer.
If you're doing it from a different layer, then the previously-mentioned SHFT+drag works perfectly. I don't see what you're trying to achieve that can't be done with these methods....perhaps a screenshot or two would help?

may be easier just to drag in a couple of guides and snap them to the top and side edges before you copy...when you paste, you'll have something to snap to. I know what you're asking but I don't know of a hidden command.

also, in the layers palette, drag the layer you want to copy to the "new layer" icon to make a copy. the new layer will retain position of the old one.

That is what layer via copy (shortcut CTRL+J) will do. If you have nothing selected, it duplicates the whole layer exactly as if you dragged that layer to the new layer icon. It's just faster. And if you happen to have something selected, it copies only that selection. So in a way its more powerful. :D

Also here's a quick little video demo, if you select an area, then hit Ctrl+C, then Ctrl+V (Copy, Paste) it will paste into the same spot as long as the selection is still there.

Hi,
Yeah, I do use Ctrl+J when I want to make a copy of a single layer.
But something I've been using a lot lately is selecting a single area, then copying merged (ctrl+shift+v), then pasting. (That's more of what I'm talking about, danlefeb-- sorry for not being clear enough.).
philnolan3d-- Are you sure they didn't duplicate the layer with ctrl+J? Whenever I just select something, ctrl+c, then ctrl+v, It never pastes in the same spot, even when the selection is still there. I even tried saving my selection as a channel, reselecting it, then reloading it and pasting, but no go. :-\

I recorded that video to post here. So I know all I did was make a selection, then hit Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V (I kept holding Ctrl while I hit C, then V specifically).

Oh, I see now!
I just tried it with the "copy merged" function, and it works!
Thank you-- I now have my answer for dealing within a document as well as between documents. :D

Link the "copy" layer with the "copy to" layer, then ctrl-c (copy) ctrl-v (paste).
