hi,

i finished modeling my character and I would like to texture it now. I like to achieve metal shaders like these:

Can I achieve those shaders with normal Maya Blinn nodes or are Mental Ray Shaders required? If so, do you know a website where i can learn more of that?

Second question is about refractions. What are them :)? I tried a google search but theres not a place where it's described.

Well, first off, those aren't metal shaders. Those are plastic or perhaps some sort of glazed pottery. I haven't used mentalray in maya, so someone else can probably give a good recipe.

Refraction is where lights gets bent as it travels through a media like water or glass. Doing a google search on refraction leads to lots of good images, check out the water images below...

There are some good metal shaders on Highend3d that you can use as a starting point.
