I'm having a bit of an issue, and I hope that someone out here might have some insight that can help me out.

I'm trying to set up a basic mesh that would be simply (but properly, for my uses) UV'ed, and transfer those UVs to my other meshes.

For example, a low-polygon torso that is UV'd, transferred to a high polygon version.

It doesn't have to be perfect, but a certain quality level would be needed or else it's a bit useless.

I'm using 3DS Max 2010, and it's system for this sucks. It crashes about 75% of the time, and the 25% that it doesn't, the results are less than desirable.

Now, I'm not going to be able to justify something like Maya or XSI - but does anybody know of any third party software that will do this job well? Preferably something that we can script, but any suggestions would be welcome.

To transfer UVs you have to use the same model. What you can do: create a lowpoly model, uv it, go to zBrush or whatever you use for highpoly modeling - model and increase the polycount and the UVs will be there.

If you have a highpoly without uvs, but you have the lowpoly still there - uv the lowpoly, increase the subdivisions via turbosmooth by exactly the multiplicator you did for your highpoly and then transfer it.

Transfer UVs: add "uvw mapping" to the source model (lowpoly?), hit the "save" button, add uvw mapping the target model (highpoly?) and hit the "load" button.
