View Full Version : Rookie - Basic Modeling question
IMarshal 08-03-2003, 08:56 PM Ok, I am emberrased to say I've owned Max since v2 and have managed to spend so little time learning it that I'm just as new today to it as I was years ago. Forgive me! :) In fact, I own another 3d program I've not had time to learn either.
I sat down to start playing with a model and have a question on offsetting new edge cuts.
I created a Box, then converted it to Edit Poly. The top polygon was then selected and inset. I then turned on midpoint snap and chose edge sub-object model. I split the interior poly in half (using Cut). Now what i'd like to do is create two new edges just slightly offset from the midpoint cut. Both new cuts should be offset an identical amount - symmetric.
Now, I know, given such a simple model (duh), I could create 1/2 of the box and then mirror what I've done and weld it together. But, what if the model was more complex?
Thanks for your patience.

Ok, first off, what version of max are you using? If it's R4, or R5, you're doing it totally wrong. There is a new way to model now. You would simply select the edges, and hit connect. This would create an edgeloop around the model. To get these edges split and offset, you wouls simply use the chamfer command....which still may work the way you are doing it.
If you're using R4 or later, you'l want to learn all this, as it's totally revolutionised the entire modeling process.
Go to the "Theoretical Sub-D" thread linking from my sig.
Also, check out martin krol's (AKA ambient whisper) video tutorials. Look hime up on cgtalk and go to his website.

Thank you for the reply 3DZealot. I'm using Max r5. Ugh... I thought I was doing it kinda straight-forward. So much for that :)
Ok, I'll look at connect and chamfer when I get back inside (surfing web out on deck weeee gotta love wireless internet).

Will search for that thread now; will also look for the video tutorials.
Thanks!

I tried connect first and it worked fine for creating a new edge splitting the polygin in two equal halves.
However, I don't see any options to get an offset from the center.
I did the same with chamfer and this tool doesnt seem to do what I want at all. It's adding a bevel to an edge. That's not what I desire. I pressed the button to open the options dialog but did not see any setting appropriate for my needs.
Just to reiterate. I've got a flat quad. I first split it in half. Then what I want to do is create another cut, parallel to the first split, on both sides of that center cut, just slightly offset. I want both of these cuts to be offset the exact same amount from the center.
What am I missing?
