Hi all,

Here's another finished concept illustration from my Chinese Tale Series. I'm looking for a job as a concept artist or production illustrator for animation or video games and I'm just working on building up my environment color keys at the moment.

Images 1 and 2 from this series can be found back on this thread:

3 more to go. Any feedback/criticism is very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Jo!

good job. great texture on your statue. yes, the perspective is impressive and the colors are nice. your temple looks a bit greek instead of chinese though.
i think the edges around the statue could use just a touch of the blur tool. kinda looks cut out with that hard edge.

Thanks for the feedback Requiem. I'll go back and soften the edges later, I agree they are too crisp.

The interior is modeled similar to the Roman pantheon. This series of illustrations is a bit sureal and blend chinese and western architectural styles. Chinese architecture does use concrete and coffered domes as well though.

So I took a few liberties :)

Excelent work!!.,., the color scheme is very nice.,., it presents a very interesting feeling to the setting.,., as if the room is somewhat dusty and empty.,.,
also the perception of depth to the ceiling is great.., gives an excellent expression of size in the room.,., like the style a lot too.,.,

i might suggest slightly desaturating the amount of yellow on the ceiling.,., and i personally like the crisp edges on the statue, i would even slightly mudd up the ceiling in general as a slight dof change.,.,

keep up the good work!!

Its a little difficult to tell what the dragon's pose is. esp the way the arms are attached but the painting is rad!!
Women in art seem to have a great eye for colors and color schemes

Thanks for the feedback. I just updated the image with a more faded gold and slight blur on the background (and parts of the dragon). This image isn't even 1/4 resolution though, in print the edges aren't quite as crisp as they appear on the sculpture.

I'm trying to finish these up as soon as possible, so I think I'm going to move on to the last 3 now.

You can check out the other roughs in the series at:

(The first 6 images under environments)

Oh and raden you're right, the mask is balinese. These are a bit of a mix of everything!

isn't it the Roman Pantheon of Gods on the background (the dome)?..

since this concept is to be Chinese you could avoid mixing cultures like that

nevertheless very nice... maybe try to increase the highlights on the dragon a bit more

Vudu, as I mentioned before, the temple environment is modeled after the pantheon. While the loose story behind the images is Chinese, the locations go pretty much all over the place. This particular image is definitely the least consistently Chinese though. It was more an excuse for a variation in interior environments.

Anyway, the next 2 images are a tea house on the moon :)

Great work!
i love the colors
Something minor is bugging me a little though so i thought id chime in..
since it is such an extremly wide Fov (judging from the background) i think the dragons tail would be getting smaller the farther it goes away from the point of view in order suggest more perspective and depth.. as it is the width seems prety constant, suggesting that it is a very narrow Fov..
a bit of atmospheric fog or shadow on the farther back tail coils might help suggest depth as well..
my 2 cents
but yea.. great work man
i doubt youl have trouble landing a job at all.

I agree with you Raden. That dragon's head is a Balinese, to be more specific, it's a 'Leak' dance performance's mask. no doubt about it. However, overally, it's a nice piece. Btw, your screen name is Javanese: Raden. If you speak Indonesian, halo apa kabar?
