Not sure exactly what you're asking - but in any case I'm pretty positive the answer is yes.
ExplosionFX explodes based on the polygons of the object. You can also cluster groups of polygons using selection tags for more realistic effects. Each exploded segment can be extruded to give depth to your exploded object.

sorry, guys, should have been clearer...i want to explode a title (for a tv show) made up of splines and then NURBS-extruded...actually, i tried it and it looked like it was working, i think i just need more practice on with the modifier...
