View Full Version : suggestions on lighting this scene
wedge 05-13-2002, 04:22 PM This is a stadium for my animation... it is untextured except for the girders and the crowd. Any tips on lighting this scene?

you should have that main big screen emit light and big lights on the top of the "dome". It will add a lot of light to the scene. And intensify the current light set on those big lights

here is an update.... the stadium is twice as long and has 64 spotlights (actually there are only 24 spots - each lighting rig has 8 modeleed spotlights, but only 3 actual spots....)
i added a few textures... the track itself does not have atexture yet... i'm deciding whether i want a metal track or an asphalt track, etc. etc...
the jumbo-tron is going to be changed to a circular one and then i'm going to add hanging banners of all sorts of ads and what not...
comments and crits welcome, as long as it doesn't add too many polys! ;)
by the way, this stadium is for a Star Wars pod-race on a very industrial planet.

hi,
i'm really not the lighting artist himself, and rellay think it looks pretty good.
i gues you could tweak the overall glow a bit, so it doesn't looks so all over the place. or you could texture the big ad cube over the lane so that it looks like a lcd screen with this little squares and maybe some dirt on the street.
but actually looks very good

hi wgeddes,
currently i'm working on pit droids. nearly finished the last thing on texturing this. everything else is completed (setup etc.) if you would like i to give it to you for free. it will take me about 3 days at all to finish it.

Hey there,
It depends on the mood you're trying to create, but I think it needs to be brighter. I just came from a hockey game and love the brightness that the halogens (or whatever other lighting they use) provide to the rink. It was just so crisp and clean. It almost felt as if my vision got better in that light.
Anyway, one of the reasons they have such bright and even lighting is because of television. I know that NBA has specific requirements for pro stadiums because of television contracts and such. Wouldn't surprise me if NHL had similar requirements.
So, if you determine that this stadium would have it's combatants broadcast all over the known multiverse, then maybe brighter lights would be in order.
That's it.
You have over hangs in the stands, usually stadiums are very well lit back up in that area and the light bounces out, or glows from the concourse. Big words like concourse and you'd almost think I knew what I was talking about...lol
Also with placing in in the "pit droids" starts me thinking about various floating light droids whose only job is to keep the set of the event lit as best as possible. Like the little camera droids you always see in sci-fi.
Looks cool, keep it going man.

hi wgeddes
it is great.
i am a cinematographer and lighting artist , and cause of my exprienses i can tell you something maybe useful.
1- use alittle yellow color in some of your lights.
2- use very soft animated noisy map as a filter.
3- use different parameters for each of lights and avoid using the same
parameters.
4- lens flares maybe helpfull.
5- grains, saturated highlit areas, more contrast ratio and very low glows in highlighted areas will help you to make a realistic scene.
6- use some moving abjects against your light projections ,their shadow will be impress audience .
Best Wishes & Good luck

7- turn on and off some times ,some of lights. it will close you to a hyper real scene.

thanks awakener...
if I wanted to do camera flashes in the audience (like people taking pictures) how should I do this?
i was thinking of doing camera flashes in After Effects - post-production

you are welcome wgeddes
post fx is a good idea but if u have comera movements in your scene it will be very hard to match effcts with footage and the camera tracker dosent help as my experience.
the best way that i test is using transparent planes in the flasher positions ,and using an animated map (6-14 frame is enogh) as a flash fx. notice to forcing planes to look at to camera (wih an small expression or maya featuers in animation section).
and at last you can use a post fx (use more brightnes and contrast plus a little gain) at the points that flashes works ,the best timing is 3-4 frames.
have a good times in your wow stadium .

Thanks awakener... I took your last comments into consideration, and even changed the locale.... the arena is back on Mon Gazza, with yellow in the lighting!
