Hi guys,

Having a head scratcher at the moment, wonder if you can help :)

I have a large area that will be covered in bricks in 3dsmax, but the bricks follow the oval object shape.

Any idea how to map a line of bricks around an object? I have tried loads of fiddling in photoshop but cant get a good output.

I have attached an image of where the bricks should follow around the oval.

Any help appreciated.

Let max do the mapping. Make your bricks in a straight line then create geometry in a way that applies mapping on the curve. I just ran a test using a single ellipse, renderable, rectangular. Worked a treat. If you have 2010 (and 2009, iirc) there is a "spline mapping" feature which may be more what you need if the geometry gets too weird on you.

Yeah this problem is best solved in the mapping phase, as opposed to the painting phase.

hi gruhn,

thanks for the reply. we tried spline mapping but it really didnt like the mesh. We got round it by making a circle spline renderable and adding the texture (which followed the circle), we then unwrapped the object and cut out the bitmap shape as needed :)

I agree - do it in CG - however if you want to use Photoshop

Make a brick. Define it as a brush that follows brush stroke angles (like a footstep brush or a chain link brush).

Make a pen path in your chosen oval, and stroke the path with your new brick brush.

Find a tank tread tutorial for 3DS Max and adapt it to your purposes. In a good tank tread tut the bricks wont bend - just follow the path while staying brick-shaped.

I'd give you a link (http://www.noir.org/tutorials/Xen%20Wildman/treadtut/treadtut.html), but I only know Maya
