View Full Version : ReUse GI/FG solutions in Mental Ray?
kiaran 08-03-2003, 09:14 AM Hi,
I've had very little luck figuring this out on my own. I'm coming from a max background where it is very easy to tell the renderer to never re-compute the GI solution regardless of whether or not their is animated geometry. I'm trying to figure out how to do a camera animation with GI, but only have to compute the GI solution once.
Doesn't mental ray reuse GI data from previous frames if nothing has moved? I hope I'm making sense, it's very late and I'm tired.
Cheers,
Kiaran

For just deselect "Photon Map Rebuild" (or "Final Gather Rebuild") in the render globals under "Caustics and Global Illumination" (or "Final Gather"), and insert the path to the map faile you want to reuse. Pretty straight-forward.

I knew it had to be in there somewhere! Their's something to be said for 'user friendly' software design. Why the hell do they have to call it 'photon map rebuild'?? Wouldn't a check-box called 're-use GI solution' make more sense?
That reminds me of something else... How cool would it be if Maya had a floating help bubble for every attribute in the whole program. Just a little help bubble that pops up when your hover your mouse for a couple seconds over an attribute. The bubble could contain straightforward info like what the attribute is used for, the range of the attibute, hints & tips, and a hyperlink to the part of the user manual that explains it in detail.
That would speeding the learning process along condiserably! Maybe I'll bother Alias about this. Unless someone here can tell me why this would not be feasable...
Thanks for the help, dwalden.
