View Full Version : Way to reduce rigged characters file size
claudiojordao 08-11-2009, 11:40 AM Hello, can somebody help me with this question please.
I've got a basic model which I rigged with psysique and a biped in 3ds Max 2009.
Before doing the rig, the file size of the model was only 696KB... after the rig it's 90.572KB.
I need to have in a all scene about 10 of those characters, and I'm getting kind of worried with performance and memory issues.
Is there any way (tip, trick, modifier, plugin) to reduce the file size of the rigged characters?
Please, if you know some tutorial or where can I find some information about this, I would appreciate very much.
Thank you all

I had this problem too...the only fix was goingot the Prefernces dialog box>> General tab and reduce your "# of Scene undos" to 1 (the smallest it will go. Then re-rig your character.
That's the only thing that I found...but there's got to be another reason? Or maybe it's just another Max bug?
Hope this helped!

Crap! Try also in Preferences....uncheck "Backup to file" and make your "autoback files" down to "1" at every 60 minutes. Make sure that you re-rig from your lower file size mesh. Create a brand new biped, then skin it.
You can do a really "loose" rig so that you don't waste a lot of time on it.
These were the only things that I changed. But we really thought that the problem was the "undo" setting.
Good luck :) -Jen
There use to be, or still is, a bug in Biped where it would store all sorts of data that it didn't need to. You might be seeing this. Look for threads on it as I don't remember the solution. I think that it had something to do with clearing the poses that were saved.

Uhuuuuuuu :) that was a wonderful tip Paul.
I'm very very grateful for your advise.
I deleted all the Collections, Poses and Posture of the biped and I ended with a file of just 1.8Mb.
Many many thanks once again.

It worked for me too! Now I can go back and recover my animations that were done on 100 mb files!
cheers!

There is a bug in earlier versions of Max, and maybe in the current version, where duplicate Copy Collections are stored every time you open or save the file. If you're not careful, the file can get so big, Max won't be able to open it.

Hey Tonya,
Yep, someone else had said the same thing...and it worked! So thank you!
BTW- we met in Corpus Christi on the Pulse Project...I'm at Walter Reed...small world.
Take care and thanks!
