View Full Version : may/june challenge
Equinoxx 05-13-2002, 02:25 PM ok, since the current challenge is about to end soon, we mods have a proposition for the following challenge . . .
The Enchanted Forest
and since the focus here is enchanted, you can do what you want basically, as long as there's trees in it and the image breaths enchantmed/magical/fantasy-like stuff, so texturing would be allowed, as well as adding figures & props . . .
i think this one is excellent because it lends itself for 2d as well . . .
what ya think people . . .
and to show you it's not a boring topic, see below

Also if you're going to texture please stress that in your title, it's mucho important, but if you can't get to the texturing don't stress yourself out, I would rather see untextured model posed and ready for final judging, then a half textured model that can't enter :hmm: know what I mean?
we're also looking into other catergories like machinery like in the short Work In Progress from ILM here's a link to that http://www.ilm.com/quicktime/DIGS.320x240.mov
think magicial :D

I was wondering if just doing a character is out of the question? The challenge sounds more scene/envionrment based then character based.
Equinoxx
05-13-2002, 09:34 PM
no it's not really out of the question, as long as the character is surrounded by an enchanted forest . . . ;)

greta i really love this topic. we are finally getting away from deja vu things like ''pa'' or ''demons''
and i guess were are gonna more environnements and vehicules who are much better than characters...
anyway im starting sketching tonight...

ps. when are we gonna see an aniamtion challenge?

yeah the 'dragons' idea sounded cool as well, but hey, a dragon could live in an enchanted forest :D
Kind of sounds like it'll be hard to only model though, it more or less evokes a finished moody image when thought of..which is fine too, more fun..
I really hope I have time to participate, have loved watching all this stuff in the past.

Finally an idea I can sink my teeth in. Im going to start roughin out some ideas this week, when will the challenge start. Also just to add maybey we should make it a character/environment/texture challenge and run it for a full month. Could make for some really pollished entrys.

Okay lil, what if we don't initially paln to texture buut then change our minds, new thread or what? Or if we do start texturing and then realize it can't be done and go for just modeling. and can I do post and sompositing in this one, so say use some rendersn and painting all composited or whatever?
Basically is this a free for all as long as there are magical trees

why not mix up it more, maybe an effect challenge (explosion?) maybe an animation challenge?

Well Personally I think that Animation more so than any other subjects is a tough one. First there is still a huge difference in app capabilities in this area. As well, I personaly wouldn't be able to chooose between a cartoony animation and a realistic animation. They both may be awesome but which is better???
One thing I would point out to minus and such is that though you may not be happy with their concept for the next challenge I would suggest you let the moderators get their job done, as yes maybe some wouldn't like to do this challenge as many didn't want to do the last one, and many won't want to make sports gear and aliens and such. I personally try to avoid cliche modeling and drawing and try to avoid the whole spaceships and aleins thing and I am not a big sports guy and just turned down a mediocre job at an awesome studio just to avoid doing those type of models so remeber that they can't make every one happy each time so whatever they suggest either follow suit or take some time to work on your own things. I think part of the idea of these challenges is that many people sit at their somputer and say "what should I do today???" or they only model bodyless heads or whatever. These challenges challenge you into trying something else and give you the basic idea to work on. As well you can even try a different style too.

seems like the ultimate challenge to me.
it's a combination of the past challenges landscape, character-gods-demons, texture light render.
hypercube
05-14-2002, 05:52 AM
well I think you could do modern day faerie land, that sits within the realm of the topic, right? I think everyone's idea and interpretation is what makes all these come out so cool.
as long as the topic is a suggestion or 'genre' instead of a rote command, there's plenty of room for tangents and ideas. I noticed the topics on the 3dluvr contest for instance have become more like assignments..seems stifling.
Look at all the crazy variation even with the rules of "breather, weapon" etc. on the PA challenge.
I've only been reading this forum since like last year, but has anyone actually been disqualified for varying a bit from the topic (within reason) ?
I'm all for keep it general..
(well especially now that I have a slim chance of participating :D )
P.S. the future sports thing sounds interesting, even though I'm not into sports, but then I'm a tech head.
P.P.S. Not to rant, but sci-fi shouldn't automatically be put down as cliche..ANYTHING can be cliche if it's done wrong, likewise anything can be awesome and original if done right.

I think its a good idea to this challenge, but this may be triky for me because I only have an 800 mhz processor :) with 639 megs of ram.. I wonder if working with high poly enchanted forest will keep me away from this challege.. but there are ways of fooling or camera tricks around this challege.. I dont know..ill have to think about this one before I take the task/.

MDB101, Dont worry bout your machine...Treat this as your oppertunity to get stuck into compositing..
http://www.dusso.com/images/pg01/PG06.JPG
This image and a couple of others that Equinoxx showed are perfect composite jobs.
I think this is a great idea... and Minus ius right that most of the time ppl have avoided the landscape thing...So why not make it the focus..
Nice topic guys...I look foward to entering.!
Anyone heard the song "Frosted Flake Wood" by "Hooverphonic"..? Itll get you in the mood for this...So will other things..

goin out on a limb here, since i haven't conferred with my co-mods, but I think that as long as the mainpart of the enchanted forest is mesh, I can't see why one wouldn't be allowed to use matte painting as well to liven it all up . . .
ofcourse we're always open to suggestions, but keep in mind that that's what they'll be, suggestions . . . i think it would be better the work with this theme and perfect it with suggestions rather then throwin in completely different ideas . . . people will ALWAYS want something else then we suggest so that would result in thread full of ideas that lead nowhere . . .
as for the texture thing kaiskai, I don't think it's necesarry [damn did i spell that right :surprised ] to add that to the threadname . . . the challenge is an enchanted forest, no need to split that up in textured or non-textured . . .
our goal is to keep the challenges fair, so any chance that might result in people gettin less views then other might be unwanted . . .
i'm glad most of you are thrilled with this theme as am I

Well I think that this is an absolutely smashing idea
What an awesome topic, and I'm sure it will produce some stunning work :bounce:
The cool thing about a topic like this is that it could end up in a piece that would look great on anyones showreel - let me tell you, we in the vfx industry are SO sick of seeing spaceships and robots and friggin cars :insane:  not that there is anything wrong with them, it's just that they aren't really great for showreels... sorry
So I'm all for trees and forests and pixies and dragons and dead bodies and and...
.....oops got a little carried away there :surprised
Well, anyway, lets make some enchanted forests then!!!! :buttrock:

Kaiskai: Yup if you wish to change your subject heading throughout the challenge, you can send either me or the other mods a pm and we'll get on it...
Reason I stressed that is because by keeping textured and untextured pieces separate, it gives those who can't even texture in the first place a fair chance...
And also if you know you can't get to the texturing after the modeling and such don't stress over it, because looking at this current challenge, I'm not to convinced that 50% of the entries will be finished :hmm:
But in any event this new challenge will be from May 20th thru to June 30th yup a full month and 2 weeks... this date will also balance us out month wise so we're back on track....
looks like it's going to be fun, I might join if I have some spare cycles ;)
cheers

6WEEKS damn and now I'm in final film I probably won't be able to get into this one, unless.... If I have a jungle fly through in my Classical piece. 2D painted element shot with a 3D camera, would that be doo enough for this? I haven't started that sequence yet, not even layout, just storyboard, would that count, I assume that might be a conflict being for another project, and if so I will likely post it to get input but not enter it in the final submission. let me know and if you need more info PM me.
Damn final film coame at the wrong time.

I think itis a great Idea you can imagine anything hapening in a forest. UFO \, Dinosaurs, Some sumurai's fighting people fishing at a lake that is in the forrest.
Then you don't have to texture if you don't want it.You can do what you want. the only fixed thing is the forrest but.
I don't know if you can take forest in a non litarally way like a forrest that excists of trees from rock or something like this
I really like the idea:cool:

Hi,
I love forests. And I am just beginning to feel my way into 3d.
So, how can I possibly get all the forest out of my head and into the good old Mac?
Aah yes, I forgot: itīs a challenge.
I will try.
Great.

and the best thing i'll learn from this is good composition (among other things) arrangement of elements
i hope this becomes final

Sounds great to me
I have a suggestion though. Would it be possible to change the way the star rating works? Seems like everyone has 4 stars or more. I think it would be more effective if there could be like only 1 or 2 "5" stars. 3 0r 4 "4" and so on. Or maybe make it so only the mods can rate them? Not sure if this has come up or not, but there are several entrees that do not rate up compared to the others, and others who are head and shoulders ahead of the rest and they all get blobbed into the 4 star area. Just a though
Thanks for all the hard work everyone does here

Alrighty! the first thing when i woked up today..i was like I know a perfect forest.. a perfect resting place for a dragon. that is If we can use our previouse models? im sure we can..plus I still have to finish his textures...which i must anyways.. so ill use that as a motivator. I look forward of taking this tasks!

:hmm: I'll either have to change gears now or hope I'm thinking of something different..sigh. I'm sure some cross-pollination is bound to occur, but I don't want to START from a duplicate of someone else's. Blah.
btw, isn't part of the restriction that you have to start with absolutely nothing, and not until the day the challenge begins? I'd be making stuff now otherwise! Egad.

HE HE HE HE HE.......mmmh...the challenge zone is a very beautyfull place.......so alive......this is a true "Enchanted " place...he he he......I love all the discussions about this new challenge......it means that people are really loving this place. It makes it alive....... .....heh...well just on the Enchanted topic......:i love it (take a look to my texturing challenge thread...)....But i gonna make a scifi blend faery tale scene................im just on it now.....coul it be possible? i hope so.
PS: one of the most interesting things i saw here,is when someone makes something that is completely unexpected and original.Something that show a very personal point of view about any topics......This is the heart of a challenge. This could make enjoyable every topic. And finally is what i point to (sadly i never really reach that point....:hmm: ) he he he.....

heres a concept for a future challenge, just thinking of everyones concern for time and such. Why not have one where its like two months and people team up to work together. whether it be a model by oneperson textured by another and then lit by a third or one person does a character another a vehicle and a third does environment and they all have to go together.

you know its funny two years ago in highschool I could go a week without sleep practically, but now a mere two years later I can barely do a single all nighter and still make it through the day. No alas I can't do it without sleep right now. I feel its partly due to stress and a really poor diet., bWanna lose wight go to Vancouver film school. I have lost 23 pounds since I started here 6 1/2 months ago. I blame it on student loans or lack there of. And one can only eat so many 93 cent pizza slices rice and noodles. (I live with a Korean roomate who loves to cook but only korean dishes, basically rice or noodles)
And now that Episode II is out I am reminded of the prime of my sleep endurance. Our new maga theatre had opend may 14 that year and I was a floor supervisor, and only 16 years old still in highschool. The theatre was disorganised of course and certainly not ready for starwars. Well people were camped allover west Edmontonmall with their advanced tickets which they had been camping for the last two weeks just to get. The opening night I wasn't even working but since I coudn't get a ticket I aske if they thought they neded the help. I started working at 8 PM, worked straight through till 6 am, and managed to buy one of the returned tickets, that a group of people returned as they were unwilling to sit in the very front row. Walked into the theatre and saw a single solitary seat in the center center of the theatre. Perfect seat for the second showing in our largest theatre. Then needless to say I was late for school and right after schoool I had to head straight to work again as I was shceduled. I worked straight till 6 again, had an hour to eat and get to school and then another whole day of school and back to work.. I was on a pure adreanaline high. I worked till 11:30 and went home for a first night sleep. Ahh those were the days.

I am storyboarding an animation right now that takes place in an enchanted garden. No trees, but lots of greenery, leaves, and such. Kinda like from a renaissance manson. Is this too far out of bounds to be submitted? How essential are trees?

Ok, this might already been asked an anwered but here it comes.
Can we like mix a real life image of a forest with cg in one image ??
Otherwise I won't get finished at the end of the month.

Great idea, lotsa possibilities, etc etc
However, don't wanna sound like a party pooper, but it seems like the 2d artists among us will have the significant advantage of being able to paint most of the forest. I mean most of the examples that lildragon showed looked to have the forest parts done in 2d.
LucentDreams
05-19-2002, 08:46 PM
well I don't think its an advantage, especiually since this one is allowed to be totally mixed. You wanna have a painted forest with a 3D tiger? go for it. Now personally I can render a jungle scene in about 3 hours that looks okay, way better id I spend more times, so I think it will be a better contest for the 2D guys this time but not really an advantage.
i think it's time to play with paint effects :D
