I have a cg scene that I want to match to a live action plane but I'm having some issues with the shadow pass. I have all my layers set up but in the shadow layer I want to have shadows casted on a plane but not have the plane rendered, clicking primary visibility does nothing and renders all black.

Do I have to override materials anywhere so I can get those shadows casted on the plane but not have the plane show in the render pass.?And how about an alpha channel for them shadows. Any tips out there?


So I want shadows casted on a plane but I don't want the plane visible on the render only the shadows. Thanks in advance.

What software? What renderer?

Most packages should have an option to matte objects (Like the 'Matte/Shadow' Material in Max or the 'Use BG' Shader in Maya).
