Hello,

I have heard about this forum for years from many people, but I thought to myself "I like the comunity at Deviant ART, why go to two?". I wish I had not thought that. Today I have spent hours looking through everybodies threads and it motivated me to start drawing... which I have not done for a long time.

I shall try to update everyday... though that probably will not last long. I have a good understanding of Photoshop so most of my work will be either done on photoshop or by hand. Lately I have been trying to work out 3D art, I think it will be a fair while before I publish anything though!

Here are a couple that I have drawn today. They all used the 15 minute resources thread but I tried to keep it to about 2/3 minutes. Two of the hands are my own, so you will not find them anywhere else!!

I would really appreciate any Comments and Critisism, I really want to know how I could best improve!

Thank you,
Shane Hudson

EDIT: So far all drawings have been done with a (kinda sharp) 3H pencil. Should I use something else?

Glad to hear my sketchbook had a positive effect :)
Fine looking studies, pretty much exactly what I would suggest you to do. Also try doing even faster ones 1-2 mins. And also remember to do longer studies. Take a reference and study if for hours!

With doing really fast drawings you put the forms into your backbone and with studying the hell out of a live model you learn everything else. You need both!

I'd say your main problem is with proportions, head getting too big, fingers too thin in some places etc. try starting by breaking the object into really basic forms like boxes and spheres and drawing on top of them (like this (http://www.stanprokopenko.com/blog/images/headanyangle/thumbnails/basic-forms-thumb.jpg)). Burne Hogarth has great books about this and I strongly suggest you to check some of them out. Andrew Loomis is also awesome.

Anyways, great start. Now just draw like there is no tomorrow and you will definetely see improvement really quick.

Thank you Jho, that is really useful advice! I have always had trouble with proportions, so I shall try to invest in some books.

More pages coming soon, just need to scan them in.

EDIT: Here they are!

With the nose studies, remember that there is a bone in the upper part and it's usually (at least slightly) pronounced. Also it makes sense to draw the upper part of the nose and now it's connected to the face. It's a triangle if to simplify, try to keep the triangle form.
Keep going, your studies look good!

Thank you mister3d, i have always strugled the most with noses and mouths!

EDIT: I am going on holiday for a week so I will probably be inactive here, I will have my laptop and pad but no scanner. Might do some digital work though!

Hi Shane, good to see you practicing a lot! When you draw complex objects (like the camera), try to reduce it to basic shapes, like boxes and cylinders and add details later. Keep going!

I have never tried that one... will have to try it next time! Thanks for commenting, I know mine is probably the worst sketchbook but comments really do help me improve I believe.

It really is time for an update!!

For Christmas I got a Wacom Intous 4. I started this on Christmas day and am still nowhere near finished!

Time: about 32 hours.

I really would appreciate any tips on how to improve. Especially how to make her look more.. well.. like a her!

There are blue lines there because I tried giving myself a paintover.. which really did help.. but I forgot to put the lines on a new layer! Hehe

I have barely started the lips, I will have A LOT of trouble with them!

Thanks
Shane

EDIT: Looking through Collings' sketchbook (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=200&t=531955) I decided to try one ofRembrandt's... Portrait of Nicolaes Ruts. It seems I have a VERY long way to go before I am even half as good as Collings.

Many people have said I should start with B/W, so I tried. Somebody also wrote up a tutorial (http://ranwal.deviantart.com/art/Portrait-Tutorial-151474552) for me to get the head right, I tried but it has not worked!

Time: 4 hours
Reference: http://www.rembrandtpainting.net/complete_catalogue/portraits/bp.html
Tools: Wacom Intuos 4, Photoshop CS4

How on earth can I do something that at least looks alright?!?!

Thanks,
Shane
