View Full Version : Render preview problem...
JamesMK 08-02-2003, 11:25 PM I've got this weird problem with preview rendering:
I cannot render to AVI. QuickTime is fine, but if I try to make an AVI, Cinema tells me that the file "preview.avi" might be in use by the Movie Player. Which is definitely not the case since the file in question doesn't even exist...
Any ideas?

Preview.avi does exist, it's the temporary file that's stored in the Cindea4D folder when you create a preview avi movie, this file is then launched and played in your AVI player of choice. If the avi player is currently open with your last preview then it can't overwrite the file so it will tell you that it can't create a preview because the file is in use. If you don't have another "preview" open in any editor/player then you should try to delete the preview.avi file (bin it *and* empty the trachcan, and then everything should be fine.

Thanks, but that doesn't help. :)
The fact is that I NEVER made an AVI-preview. I got the error message the very first time I launched a preview render. That is, Cinema wasn't even installed prior to that. And naturally, I did check the folder to see if the file was there in order to delete it, but it was nowhere to be found... It's very strange.
Definitely dont quote me on this as its a stab in the dark.I seem to remember QT having hassles with AVI.I am not positive but didnt AVI {on a Mac} have to QT Pro installed to work properly?
Stu.

I get the same results with Quicktime. I get a similar message about the movie player being in use (but it's not and I deleted any old renderings). It seems to only happen in the full preview render, not if you click on Editor Render...which, of course doesn't help.
I have yet to get an answer for this problem.

bobzilla: huh, interesting. That's the same but vice versa then...
Mighty peculiar indeed. Now where's Srek when you need him, eh? (oh wait, it's still sunday, right?)

Srek doesn't know sunday from any other day anymore. He has a 24/7 contract ;) - the only way to get things done.

JamesMK: Yes. Very weird. It doesn't seem to happen on every scene (just the ones I NEED to use it on!). But then, the scene shouldn't really make a difference.

If all else fails you can try to personally ask Maxon.

emberghost::: Yeah, I just used that li'l support form over at maxon.net. Since it seems I'm not entirely alone with this, I figured it would be a good idea to ask them directly.
We'll see what happens.

Hello, Did this ever got solved?
I used to be able to make a quicktime preview then suddenly it stopped working.
I also tried avi with the same result; when I open the C4D folder I see the mov or avi file with zero Kb, after deleting AND emptying the trashcan same result.
Any suggestions that were not made before?
Thanks a lot.
Kind regards, Robert G

I also have had this problem in the past. What I found was that its like c4d still thinks as the error message implies that there is a preview in use.Its quite a while ago since I last had this problem, but try chucking a file called Preview.mov.It puts itself on my Mac in the Maxon> Cinema 4D R9 folder. No doubt it will be the same place under Windows I guess.
Mdme Sadies earlier post explains it better.
Good luck :)
