View Full Version : First Head on Maya, need some help.
Oglok 08-02-2003, 10:12 PM Hi everybody
I'm trying do model my first realistic head on maya. For the moment I think it isn't too bad, I've done e lot of research.
But I've got a problem when I attach the head and the ear, we clerly see the difference. So I wanted to know if somone could help me.
I'm also thinking about lowering the number offace of my head. Am I wrong ?
Well now time to crits and comments, here are the samples.
Thx

now im new to maya, but im not new to modelling and i would say ur first mistake is that you haven't joined the ear properly to the head, even if you have all those extra points you have to make them flow into the rest of the head,
have u tried using subdivision surfaces? they are so awesome, coming from lightwave over to maya im quite excited to get started on my first organic model in maya anyways you should try to flow the ear into the rest of your model, or you can always texture map and put hair over that part, it is going to be where the person's sideburns are anyways so it doesn't really matter that much for now
keep going

Ok thank you.
I'll try to convert this into subdivision, to see the result.
For the ear i try to cut the model from the extra points but I still have this "bug".

try planning ahead so that the ear has the same divisions around as the surface your binding it to, also if you can try and limit the "discrepencies" to behind the ear so that way you can hide them .

ok i'll make these little modifications.
Yes the ears will be hidden, but I watend to model them, only to see if i cqn do it ^^.
I think i'm almost done with the modelisation, so I'm wondering how making hair, i'm planing to use planes with opacity maps, but i think there are many others maners to do it with maya.
If you have an idea, i'll be glad to hear it.
Thank you for your comments.

I've lowered the number of face on the chin, added the eyes to adjust the head for them.

Heya Oglok ..
Just wanted to say that your on the right track with your nice looking head model there :wavey:
I am also for the first time trying to learn Maya, and if I may say compared 2 this 3D Studio Max seems like childsplay Maya has a steep learning curve but I hope to get there soon. Im very interested on seeing your progress on this one maybe we can help eachother out a bit ? Im making my first head model as well so let me know if u like to..
Greetsss.. Good luck

No problem to share our little knowledge.
I've finished my first year as a CG student, based on 3d studio max. Now i'm entering the second year with maya, but i heard that our teacher was useless, so i'm usig maya a lot this summer in order to have little basis.
Well I think i'll review the lips, the nose, then i'll start to texture this head.
Does somebody have a good tutorial for hair, with planes or with paint effects ?
Thank you

This is a nice start for your first head in maya
I have a few suggestions but its hard without knowing what look you are trying to achieve and what reference you are using.
The forehead, nose and lips are making it look like a black female (am I right?)
If not then the nose might need turning up a little at the end and being a little more bulbus. The edges of the nostrils need some work and the top of the nose/forehead between the eyes needs to come back more.
Also the outer part of the upper lid also need fold over and eyebrow muscle should create a crease.
I hope I im being helpful and not just blabbing, but again great start :)

@ijinn :
Thank you very much for this link.
@andrewley :
I haven't duplicated the other sde of the head, so I didn't see if the nose and the lips matched.
No she isn't a black female, but a japanese one, here are the references
Front (http://berserk016.free.fr/3d/face.jpg)
Side (http://berserk016.free.fr/3d/profil.jpg)
For this first head I don't have good reference image, and i really wanted to model Hikaru Utada.
I'm going back to match the reference a little better.
Well i don't have a lot of time but i'll soon update this thread.
Thank you

well i've spent some time on the tutorial you gave me.
It's very powerful, and faster than i thought.
It took only 30sec to render this image.
Hair (http://berserk016.free.fr/3d/hair_test.jpg)
I'm looking for something to get rid of this damn aliasing on the strands.
I'm also looking for some help in order to improve this hair, not the shape, it's easy to move the CVs, but the material, in order to make them more realistic.

holy moly this is an old thread, i remeber back when i actually liked subdiv's in maya before i found out how crappy they are. lol now i use nurbs and polys. nice model tho it's turning out rather well. i would like to know what technique you used on the hair as i have terrible problems with actually doing hair myself. thanks

yes this thread is one year old.
i've worked on this head during summer 2003, then CG school so i had a short film to create. I've took this head out of it's dusty place to continue it some time ago.
For the hair i've tried maya hair, but the hair shadows are crappy, and although i used the oversampling for PFX, there is always aliasing on hair. So i tested shave and haircut, which is simplier and with powerful rendering. Maybe when i find a really good job i might buy it ^^.
Styling the hair with maya hair is really a pain, you must use the curves provided by the hair you created, you cannont use the curves you created, like in shave and haircut and the old way of doing hair with PFX.
I may animate this head, but i'll do it later. I've a lot of work on modeling and texturing.
Thanks

looking better. try to concentrate on the eyes. they look like the most inhuman right now. think of the eyelids as being part of a sphere that can cover they eyes. they're oriented so that the top lid is generally closer to the center of the eye than the lower lid, and thus it sticks out more. think of whwn you close your eyes how the upper lid moves down to the lower and not vice versa. other than that it looks pretty good.

the eyes look too far apart, remember the rule there is an eyes distance between the two eyes (give or take) im pretty sure the measurement was the head is approximately five eyes wide but i could be mistaken, anyways like i said the eyes look too far apart. keep up the good work tho!

For the eyes, i don't think i'll change them, i like them, that's my goal :).
I still need to make the hair.
I worked on the eyes reflection, lust put an hdri map on a sphere ^^
Put an ambient occlusion map with low opacity (around 25%), to give more volume, especially to the eyes.
The shadows are grainy because it's still a fast test render.
I need to finished this image quickly, i'm getting bored of working on it.

This one is becoming quite nice.
I'm glad you DID make some eyelashes on the bottom eyelid.
I'm not really an expert on headmodelling, just started my own first human head, so I can't really see anything else that needs to be changed. Does she have ears?:)
