View Full Version : lost my model
KidderD 08-02-2003, 05:07 PM I don't know what happened, I can't get it back. I get this error
No vertices were merged. Tolerance too large - no geometry left after merge //
I still have all the history for the model, but no geometry, also when i check the history, my tolerance for merging was set to .02. I tried exporting, I'm not sure what else to try. Has anyone else encountered this? I'm wondering what happened here? This is brutal, my model is gone after months of after hours tweaking... that's too painful.

so i searched for disappearing models in the data base, and this isn't the only time this has happened, wow what a pissoff... i guess for anyone who doesn't know, to avoid this problem you should assign a shading group, not just a shader. I can't believe that there is no way to get this back... i lost while i was working on it. Not after i saved it and then reopened it.. I am currently involved in the decision to consider purchasing maya, and well this just blows me away!!

Have you tried selecting the last node in the history?
Copy the name of the function in the top of your INPUTS box for the object. Type that into the quick selection box in the top of the menu bar. Once that node is seleted, press delete.
This is different from Undo. This deletes the last crazy function you did on your model. Its also good measure to save versions of your work so if something DOES go wrong, you can go back to an older version. (Losing minutes instead of months.)
Also, try exporting as an OBJ. Thats a very stable model format.

There is kind of a way to get your file back if the model is lost. An example say Maya crashes before you were going to save, well Maya does a back-up save of what you are working on every 5 seconds or minutes (been a while so i don't remember the time length) this is placed inside the temp folder on your harddrive. Rule to remember don't open Maya back up or it will save over the file(s) that it backed up. Hope that helps.
