View Full Version : Mental Ray render crashing in Maya 2009

I've recently upgraded to Maya 2009, and I can no longer get a Mental Ray render to complete. I've tried many different scene files, rendering with nearly every option turned off or on, and rendering through a window / via batch render / or with a command line. All of them crash at some point, never completing their renders.

I tried installing the Service Pack, but does not seem to help. Maya Software rendering works fine. Anyone ever had this problem or does anyone have a fix?

Check that your environment variables point to the version of Maya you are using.

I made sure that I had a Maya.env file in my 2009 folder but all of the env files are blank. Is there something specific that needs to be in the file?

I meant the actual system environment variables.

If you're on Windows they are located in the system dialog in the control panel. There are a couple of entries that point to Maya and MR might get mixed up if there are entries linking it to an older version.

It looks like I have a single "Path" variable that points to:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2009\bin;C:\Program Files\Alias\Maya7.0\bin;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\AGL;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\;C:\Program Files\Autodesk\backburner\;C:\Program Files\Common Files\DivX Shared\;C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\

It looks like these are rougly in order of installation.

I have set up separate Maya variables in the past for individual versions of Maya. Do you think that is something I should set up?

Still in need of some help. I can't get Mental Ray to work at all with 2009, but I get these errors at startup. Any thoughts?

One other note, then it does render and not crash, it rendered all the geometry black against a white background and no alpha channel.

aah i dunno if iam having the same problem as you. But my mental ray crashes randomly, it does render, but it stops randomly. Stating it has completed the render.

Iam also trying to fix this problem, however for mine, i think it could be due to the ram, cos Iam only running on 512mb of ram.

Do you think this could be the cause of my render problems.

Hey Jem,

Yes, less than 2GB of RAM (preferably 4 or more) is better to have to rendering. Otherwise, you start pulling from Virtual Memory (basically your computers unallocated HD space.) Your system and Maya alone are probably using way more than 512MB, so try to get some additional RAM.

Mine might be a problem caused by having both Maya 7.0 and 2009 on the same machine. I'm experimenting today and will get back to you.
