View Full Version : I need help texturing NURBS bottle!
brianemsu2 08-02-2003, 04:22 PM Ok, hopefully this post will have some pictures in it, I haven't gotten used to these image posting methods.
I am having a hard time figuring out how to wrap a label around the neck of a NURBS bottle.
Here's the label, which I scanned and made a stencil for to get rid of the white edges.

When I project the image onto the neck of the bottle...basically...it don't do right. Somehow I need the label not to be curved in photoshop, but how do I achieve this without distorting the letters and all? Here's what I have on the bottle at this moment.

I'd say adjust the UV coordinates instead of the image, scaling the bottom of the label. Not sure which 3d program you're using. You might also adjust the shape of the bottle neck, make sure it has the same flare as the real bottle.

oh yeah, sorry about that. I am using Maya. --I was under the impression that NURBS UV coordinates are based on the edit points of the model and cannot be manipulated like UV coordinates of a polygon mesh. That is my problem here... I guess I could convert the model to polygons and do a little UV push/pull action to get the label to stretch downwards, but that would still leave me with a hole in my NURBS capabilities. I am not sure... maybe there is no way to do this in NURBS texturing? Although with a program like Maya, seems like there would be some kind of method...?

I don't use Maya, but perhaps you could distort the image into a rectangular shape by applying it onto a curved piece of geometry, then distorting that into a rectangle, then rendering that out as a new texture...

It does not matter ...
If the letters are distorted after taking the curve image and distorting it into a rectangle to match the NURBs coordinates.
The projectiong back onto the 3D shape will be the "inverse" and should make all look well again.
The real problem is using the best tool/software to stretch the image back into a rectangle.

after projection with a cylinder projection type....try to get the seems as good as possible using the interactive placement. Then, use the 3d paint tool with "clone" to hide the seam.
because the label is curved....using this as a projection is really not possible....tweak in photoshop is your best bet...

yeah, I finally got it to work after bezier warping the image in After Effects...after that I just placed the label on the neck of the bottle...the curve of the letters is really not all that noticable. There is a seam in the back but it's really not that much of a problem either. I didn't know After Effects could be so useful.

curved, tweeked, and on the bottle.
I'm looking for some software to warp my images and would like to see how well you did ... if you have time.
just thinking out loud, is it possible to project the texture onto a cylinder then scale the cylinder appropriately to match the angle of the neck?

I don't think there is really anything to keep you from projecting the image onto a cylinder and modifying it that way...it is basically the same as importing the image into an editing program.
You would probably need to make the cylinder have a lot of sections and spans to get more accuracy out of it.

In the one above, all you have to do is manipulate the curve handles on the corners of the image to get the desired effect.

'mesh-warp' (above) is basically what you get if you mapped the image onto a cylinder to edit. Just move the vertices to warp the image (better for percision editing).
