With your rig I'd stick to the OS you are already using.
If you want to take advantage of the 64bit OS add more ram, go from 4 to 8gb.
Or try winXP32...
For a new rig with 12GB RAM ddr3 I'd go directly to Windows 7 64.

I just ordered my new rig, it has 12GB DDR3 and I know I will install Windows 7 for sure, to bad I'll need to do a new installation when I'll get the final release.

Has anybody actually ran CG apps (and games) on Window 7? I have Vista and it runs fine for me, but if it has significant speed gain, I might consider it. But if its something like 3 frame a second like some of the game test I read, I'm cool with staying with Vista.

I have the following apps installed on my Windows 7 x64 installation....
Cinema 4D
After Effects CS4
Premiere Pro CS4
Photoshop CS4
Syntheyes
RealFlow
All of them run just fine without any problems. I havent tested any games on it, but im not much of a gamer.
If it makes any difference, I ran a test to see how well Win7 would perform while multitasking. I loaded a 3 million poly scene in Cinema 4D and started rendering at 720p. (all 8 cores were at 100%)
I then loaded a 720p shot into After Effects and started playing around with it. I also added some particles to the scene. There was very little lag, if any at all, and no crashing or freezing. At the same time, I also had a sequence loaded in Syntheyes for tracking.
The task manager showed that I was only using around 3.5 gigs of RAM. I'de say thats pretty good considering I never do much of anything while my machine is rendering.

You'll see next to no speedup in FPS.
However you'll see a huge speedup switching, loading, closing applications, as well as greatly improved bootup/shutdown and file operations.

I'm a max user and have no issues...my render are faster then before, but that's because I got an i7 now.
any how, my system is much more stable then before under heavy scenes.
I do not know about maya, I use it at my client office, but they are on xp64...

Well it seems Windows 7 is a promising high quality OS wid enhancement in the architecture of it..Hmm It also seems that my 4GB ram will not give me a proper freedom to work wid 3D Applications side by side widin Windows 7..I hope I would change those rams atleast to 6 GB or something around to boost the rig to have and run Windows 7 smoothly..I have seen so many reviews and they all liked this OS and preferring over Vista and XP actually..Thats why I was also thinking to switch over it but not at the moment..Will do that after enhancement in my hardware profile..Thanks a million my friends..Ur help greatly appreciated always..God bless ya all:)
