i would recommend a really fast one :scream:

kidding... i would recommend an aftermarket board with an nVidia chipset

you can save so much money that way... while still getting all the good stuff you need.

i use a radeon 9800 pro, and i get stupidly high ogl scores (2772 on hw lighting). but it doesn't handle dualplanes for some reason (at least cinema doesn't see that it does).

Hi Per,
it is intentended this way by ATI. Only their line of Fire GL cards supports Dual Planes

Personally, I would buy something like the Geforce FX5900. It will give you great speed, very well made and stable drivers, plus you get the dual planes features to speed up the editor. Alternatively I would pick the Radeon 9800Pro, this is the fastest graphics card I have seen running cinema to date. Beware of the ATI drivers though. They've improved drastically, but they could still be better.

For a smaller budget, try something like a Geforce 4Ti, whatever fits your pockets in the 4200 - 4800.

This is assuming you are running a PC.

I am considering switching to the Geforce in order to get the dual plane support because my ATI8500 offers none. Is it worth swapping for this feature alone? How much does the dual plane support really help, and does it improve the current situation whereas you can't use OpenGL with viewport background images?

I have a Gainward GeForce 4800Ti, Cinebench's HL ratio is 8.15. It plays a mean Vice City, too.

i think, if you install a driver hack for the 9700/9800 you can turn your 9x00 into a FireGL with support for Dualplanes.
