View Full Version : Environment: Planet Mars Render
MovieRelics 08-02-2003, 02:34 AM I know this is boring compaired to the other threads, but I'm working to create a realistic Mars space shot. Everyone please let me know if you see anything that I should do or not do. Thanks

stars? Or maybe just a tiny tiny tiny amount of a dust atmosphere barely visible. And maybe not so dark shadow on planet? Shouldn't this be in W.I.P forum?;)

The reason I didn't put it in WIP was if nobody had any crits, I was done with it. But thanks for the input. It does have a atmoshpere, but it really dosn't show up till you get closer. The stars, that I'll have to add.

Try posting it to the WIP section, much fundamental coversations about "building a planet" could be done there...
Some more pronounced athmosphere would be nice, and the terrain of the planes is too visible, this problem could be also fixed with the denser athmosphere. From this distance, the terrain wouldn't be this clear to see, IMO,...
But nice pic though.

Really, it is way too red. Also you should have some sort of polar ice cap in there. I believe your choice of veiwpoint should be rotated just a bit also... If you put Olympus Mons out further to the limb, we could see the sun setting on Valles Marineris.
The terrain is quite clear if Mars isn't undergoing a global duststorm, which is common. Yet if we are able to see features this clearly, the natural color and shading of Mars should be more evident.
There is a huge amount of Mars images available for reference, from land based telescopes, Hubble, flybys and vehicles in orbit.
If you need references start here... http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/global/index.html
This is a neat site also... http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/moc_atlas/
If your interested in the huge dataset of existing high resolution images from the Mars Orbital Camera (MOC) start here... http://www.msss.com/moc_gallery/
I also think this should be in a WIP thread, because I really don't think your done yet.
But you've got a good start! :)
EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot... The Face (http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/mgs/msss/camera/images/moc_5_24_01/face/)
EDIT AGAIN: I've gone back and looked at some references. Your terrain features are too crisp, even for clear weather.
I hate to beat you up with the crits, but I've done a lot of looking at Mars, and if you want something that Mars watchers will know as Mars, you need to keep WIP'in.

to help with atmosphere, try adding a slight glow to the planet.
where did you get your texture map for mars? I know max comes with one, and somewhere on the nasa site there is a good high res one.
Yeah, and I agree this should go in the wip section

Thanks for the input. To answer some of the questions, I've got the texture from someone at Nasa that I was creating this for. The shader that I originally had to show the atmosphere was originally alot more clear from a distance. But I was told to tune it down. Your not suppost to see the atmoshere side untill your closer. As the camera get's closer, you can really see the air. If you look to the top of the planet where the light is hiting it, you can see it as it trails off into the darkside of the planet. Thanks Electrofirma for the reference material. I've checked that out. The comment about the terrain looking to high or sharp, that one I actually have the NASA reason for it. The refrence images are from the Hubble, this render is suppost to be as if your approching the planet from a ship. So things would look a little bit more clear. I will turn the red down a little more and try to add some cloud storms. Thanks for the input though guys. You reminded me of the old rule, just when you think it's done, you can do this, this, this, and this, and that, and that..........
Thanks for the help thought and I really do appriciate the tips.
The real mars.
