View Full Version : A good way to bevel in Max?
GammaStrike 08-02-2003, 02:31 AM I'm wondering what is the best way to bevel an edge in 3DS Max. I know about chamfer, but how can I use it to make a round edge and not just a flat chamfer.
Should I chamfer same edges a couple of times?

Yep, just chamfer it a few times (I usually do it twice).
Then play with your smoothing groups to have a nice smooth trasition between the edge faces.

Are you going to use subdivision?

Hum, ok. :)
Otherwise (is that the correcly word? ), you can select the edges and than extrude them withou any Height. I did a little tutorial, see below please:
"Chamfered" Edge living the original Edge:

Create a Box for this experiment:

Enter in the Sub-object EDGE and select an edge or a group of edges:

With the tool Chamfer, the Edge will be chamfered but it will not leave the original edge of the original structure. That isn't what we want:
http://www.redpixel.hpg.com.br/extrude03.jpg
So, to automate this, lets use the EXTRUDE. With the single or group edges selected, hit the extrude button:
http://www.redpixel.hpg.com.br/extrude04.jpg
Set zero to the Height of this extrusion:
http://www.redpixel.hpg.com.br/extrude05.jpg
And with the 'Extrusion Base Width' parameters, you can set the distance between the new edges from the original.

Whit a little cut, we can make it all quad, if you want...

Hope this will help someone. By.

good:applause:
PiledotNET - did you know that Meshtools has a function that does exactly that (chamfer but keep original edges) in one easy to click motion?
Check it out
here (http://www.s21net.com/meshtools/download.html)

Hi AJ.
I now meshtools have this tool, this is a must have script for 3ds max 4 or 5. But I'm always try to learn and use 3ds max built-in functions first.
Tnks anyway

That's how I am. The only script I use that's not max is Solidfy.
Thanks PiledotNET for your "chamfer" tip. I did that and then applied a smoothing group to it. It gave me the affect I needed.
