Somewhere out there, there is a plug that will make the geometry match UVW coords. Wish I could remember the name. So, if your sphere has coords, copy it, and run the plug. Then it's a matter of Morpher or whatever.

Hopefully somebody will remember the name of the plug. I believe it was by either Chuggnut or Comet.

Or you can try the Melt modifier.

edit:
The script is called "XYZ 2 UVW". You can get it at Chuggnut (http://www.chuggnut.com/) in the script section. Not sure which version of Max it works with, though.

edit2:
Hmm... it's under Max 3.x.
Oh, man!

John K Jordan has answered this question many times, he's become an expert on it. His method can be found somewhere on the Discreet 3ds max board, including .max files. Or you can ask him there, he'll kindly post it again. No plugins needed, if I recall correctly. Oh, a scripter named Swami Lama made it into a script. Search for that too if you want.
