View Full Version : NetRender Issue
MidnightCow 08-04-2009, 05:24 PM Hi,
I`ve had a problem when rendering things via NetRender quite a few times in the past and now that it`s happening again just getting hugely pissed off.
The problem is random frames coming out with low lighting. I don`t know if its the sky lighting that`s being dropped or some other thing but it generally happens with random bunches of frames throughout rendered sequences.
Is this a known problem that others have experienced?
I`m pretty sure it`s contained to NetRender. At this point it`s causing me major headaches as i have lots of fairly large batches of renders going and half of them are coming out ruined, whereas the offending frames render fine on a single machine.
Thanks.

You are probably using GI right?....if so..... I have read previously that you should calculate the GI on a single machine and use the same cache on all the machines...do a search, this has been solved.
If its not GI..then I dunno

Nope no GI. Just a sky/environment object and a couple of omnis, no AO or anything either.
I did notice that one of the frames it had occured which was using the DOF post effect, it looked like the DOF hadn`t rendered either. Maybe a clue for someone who knows.

You should probably give us more info, like what version of Cinema you're running, what kind of machines are on your network, are you using anything like Thinking Particles or particles that might not be baked and being processed differently across your network and obscuring your lights somehow. Also, you should do yourself a favor and do DOF in AFter Effects with something like Lenscare. Much faster, more accurate and flexible.

Actually you should upload your scene so we can look at it instead of playing 20 questions.

do you have different versions of quicktime on the render clients (they need to all be the same)

The renders are running over two dual-quad xeon xp64 rackmount units. To be honest it`s happened in the past just rendering over the general machines in the office so i don`t think it`s down to spec.
This particular batch is rendering on the V10 server/client (not V11 as they were initially set up for 10 and the sky didn`t translate over to 11). They`re rendering as 1920x1080 jpg`s.
Dunno what more i can say.. it`s happened with other completely unrelated scenes in the past, it has to be a NetRender problem and i don`t think i`ve overlooked anything obvious.

If anybody wants to offer to render one i can send it over - i cant upload anything for general consumption as although it`s not nda i wouldn`t want to distribute it willy nilly.
Here`s an inconspicious example of it occuring:

email me direct and if you want we can run a test here on my 10.5 on the farm and see if any frames come out with the error.

I had a similar problem with the sun tag. It was gone once I removed that tag.

oh i missed that if he mentioned a sun tag - that is true...
the sun tag can read the time on the computer and alter the sun position - i've had users in other countries run their job and they come out with my time zone instead (even if it is set to a fixed time i think)
if there is a sun tag then maybe the clock on one computer could be off and the time difference could alter the sun position
