View Full Version : Smoke/Fog in Lightwave.
|[FXP]| 08-01-2003, 04:30 PM Hi, i'm wondering if anyone knows a tutorial, or any plugins that'll help me create some good looking smoke or fog. I've tried making a box, setting a cloudy texture then making it a little transparent but that doesnt look too good.
Any help appreciated, thx :)

I don't know exactly the type of effect you are aiming at but you can use hypervoxels with sprites.

I was aiming at getting a good smoke effect for a static image:

i'm still experimenting with hypervoxels, made an explosion (http://www.kuhli.co.uk/explode.avi) so i'll play about a bit and try some smoke. Will hypervoxels still work in a static piece? I thought they were for animations, but i guess you could just move the timeline along a bit...

Don't know if this is the "right way" to do it, but here's what I would do:
Create an object or layer in modeler consisting of points around the scene, which represtent the size and volume of your smoke object. Spray points is a good tool to use. In layout, define that layer as a hypervoxel object (volumetric or sprite is good for smoke). Tweak the size of the hypervoxels until you achieve a good fluid appearance. Then tweak the textures until you get a good semi-transparent material. Or just load up a hypervoxel smoke preset and tweak it. It's best to have VIPER on while doing this, for quick previews.
If you were to animate the smoke, I imagine you would use hypervoxeled particles, but for a still, modelled points give you maximum control over the form of the smoke cloud and there is no problem using static points.
Good luck.
