View Full Version : stone texturing
Digital Soap 08-01-2003, 07:15 AM Hello everyone,
Im in need of some major help. I just started a new project and my goal is to shoot for photo realism. I don't have much of a problem with modelling anymore, but it seems the only thing not bringing realism or just plain good looks to my works is texture's. I have use photoshop to know what everything does and where it is, but i have no clue going about making nice texture's to bring realism to my models.
I know this is really early to be posting this image, but I just want to show you what I need recommendations on when it comes time to texture.
I know someone here will guide me the right way.http://www.geocities.com/outofthisworldcartoons/building01.txt

Well, I wrote some advice, but then CGTalk ate it.
First, get some photo reference of real castles.

Then get appropriate photo textures.

Or learn how to make stone yourself.

i hope this doesnt come out really defensive, but if it does I dont mean it too. I dont need any reference images for castles, this isnt a castle, its just some type of italian home like design Im just doing as I go. My main goal in this short little project is to understand lighting and texturing better. I know how to UV and all that great stuff, just making texture's is my problem, and I also know i could go out take some pics or pull some off the web, but what fun is that. Im just trying to learn how to make them like most of you here on cgtalk do.

Oh, OK. Well, for architectural work I mostly use photo textures, but only for the color channel. Personally I find photos to be the fastest, and the most accurate. Then I go in and paint detail issues, like stains, a bump channel, specular channel, etc. I haven't seen any tutorials that go through the process of mapping a building, or I'd point you to them.
Here's a good couple good painting tut sites, might help you. Not sure if you've already seen these, if so I apologize...
