View Full Version : Memory allocation : Easy question
Deathcricket 08-01-2003, 04:45 AM Greetings, first let me apologize for such an easy question but I can't find the friggin window that controls this.
I'm using a small picture in the viewport backround (for tracing purposes) and when I zoom in closely to examine detail I get a silly message that says "warning doing this will use 17megs of memory". I then click ok and it proceeds to let me zoom in. I would rather it just let me zoom in until I was putting a serious strain on my system. I have almost a gig of memory and can easy handle the 17megs :P
Was thinking it was in <preferences<rendering<bitmappager, but figured I would just ask since I have clue. Oh yeah I'm using Max5.0

there´s somethin about that on Joan DÁrc Tutorial if i aint mistaken(background view right?) ITs somethin to do with the size...or was it the planeS? Well i dunno, but go to the place where u have viewport preferences(aint got max on this pc so its kinda hard to remember) Custumize/somethin ..rolldown and find 256 and 512 maps. turn one of them one and try out the result.
and i´m sorry for not being more explanatory:blush:

Isn't that an error that only occurs in software-mode? :curious:

@TheSolidSnake - Hmmm I checked that tutorial and he actually puts his maps on a plane in the background. I guess I will try that tonight and see if it alleviates the problem. I don't know why you would put them on a plane if you never intend to actually move them.
But I dont have my background image on a plane, I just have it set in the background itself. Its in views>viewportbackground>images. I have "locked" and "match to bitmap" selected so I can zoom in and out to see details. When I zoom in close and it starts using more memory is when I get the notice. I just want to "up" the value so it doesn't bug me everytime I change viewports, it should not need my permission everytime it wants to use 17megs of memory.
@gaggle - It's not really an error per se. It's more of a notice and you have to click ok to actually zoom in. Just go to views>viewport background> or Alt B(I think). Choose any jpeg or tif, make sure match bitmap and locked are selcted, then zoom in on the image to see what I'm talking about. On default it bugs you at 17megs, which isn't alot now-a-days as anyone knows.
Anyways, thanks for the 2 replies. Anyone else know the window that adjusts memory allocation for the viewport background?
