I'm wanting to make a leech in Maya. I can make it move with a bones setup, but how would I make it scrunch up and stretch out to move like they do, and also be able to move and curl. Is bones the best way to go?

Any help is very appreciated!

If it is something as simple as a leech it shouldn't be a problem to use a simple bone setup. Try donig some stuff most people say you shouldn't, like translating the bones positions, for the squash and stretch. Or scaling the bones works pretty well also.

and for the best advice make this a shelf button or a hotkey

select -hi;

this will select the hierarchy of bones you can select the first bone in a chain and then hit the select -hi; command and then try rotating only one axis, if the bones are all oriented the same direction it should all rotate the same way.

This will give you and illustrated idea of what I mean.

I could also suggest you experiment with the IK-Spline tool.
