that woman in your avatar is HAWT !!
ok well there is no possible way to achieve what you want to do in max...
:surprised
but seriously now... all you will need to do is assign a 'material effects channel to your mat. (it's a button located in the material editor rollout) the default is 0, so just change it to whatever you want to...now go to video post, glow, setup, change the source to 'effects ID' + whatever number you gave your mat. .... that should be it ...
edit: almost forgot, to just make a certain color glow just change the filter to bright(or hue) and play around w/ the number values... ('filter' will be located in video post glow setup options)

It has been some time since I last played around in Max but if you want certain elements of an object to glow you can use a Mix channel (I guess that was the name) to blend the base material and the one with the glow with an alpha mask. You then just apply an effects channel as mentioned to the material with glow.
I used that to give some lowpoly spaceships from a game an enginbe glow. Should be pretty simple though might need some playing around.

Well, there are work arounds.
1. If you want a tatto on the arm, Select the faces around the area, make a copy of them. Make sure they are PUSHED (outer than the arm). Then , assign the tatto material to it and change the effect id of the opacity channel to 1. Now, in videopost, you should be able to glow using effect id(last time I checked)
But there is a major problem with this. If there are any object underneath the tatto. That object glows as well!(try it out, it's weird). So, you'd have to do two pass of rendering. One for complete layer and the other for the arm(which is a lot of work to composite later in)
So, the second method comes.
2. Actually recreate the tatto inside max using shape and shapemerge. It take a lot of time (when you have a good tatto shape) but it does glow properly(set object channel to 1)
(now there is a workaround to this workaround. )
Ever heard of the natural paint tool? It has the ability to paint out splines. Use it to trace out the tatto then use surface. faster huh?
Now if anyone figure out how to do glow with alpha map I 'd like to hear about it
Probably has something to do with the alpha map option in glow.
Hope this helps you.
