View Full Version : Creating an X-men Game Like Prototype?

I didn't know that I could love a game as much as I do Prototype. Seriously. I have never been so immersed in a game to the point to where I feel as though I'm actually inside of it and really having to think on my toes. The sheer amount of freedom completely blows my mind and the game feels as if there are absolutely no limitations. You can essentially do everything and anything you would in real life (i.e. Civilians are not lifeless androids roaming the streets--you can pick them up, throw them, use them as weapons, etc., the entire world is interactive and destructible, if you fail the mission the first time you can go about it a completely different way the next several times, etc). Granted, this is a character from DC Comics, but I'm wondering if the character is from one of the branching studios from DC. This is more of a "dark" hero (considering the fact that you kill people for energy).

Well, my point is, how feasible would it be to have a game like Prototype only fitting the mold of the X-men Universe. The X-men are also located in New York City (as is most of the Marvel Universe), so there's your sandbox setting right there. Along with a rich story to string together one or several mission story arcs, imagine being sent out by Xavier. You can either ride solo or gather a team of 2-3 other characters that you can exchange off and on (very similar to X-men Legends or MUA). Each character would be similarly set up like Prototype (giving out "Evolutions" instead of Upgrades) that would tailor themselves to who the character was. For instance, if you had Storm:

- Combat: Gale Winds, Ball Lightning, Thunderstrike, Mother Nature, Blizzard
- Movement: Flight (followed by different ranks), Gale Lift (jumping)
- Survivability:Wind Tunnel (deflects oncoming ranged attacks), Blinding Thunder (temporary blinds foes with incoming melee attacks)

You get the idea, right? Missions and what not would fit the mold of the X-Universe, but how you went about each mission would be reflected in the world around you. You would have to be mindful of nearby citizens and what not else.

My ideas are jumbled, but I would be very excited to see a game like this come to life for the X-men. Though X-men Legends was probably the best action RPG for the X-men, it still didn't do the universe justice.

What do you all think?

I really like the idea and being ambitious person is great, but know this - you will need MONEY, TIME and ARTISTS for this, and you'll most likely not succeed at all (although there is always the chance), unless you have vast experience that you should start with a smaller goal, what's your specialty anyway ?

I wouldn't even try to attempt this on my own or without a fairly decent sized studio to back it up. That's entirely too much work to attempt solo and I have absolutely no coding experience. I'm just a modeler/texturer, so I won't get that far with it if I did attempt to do a project of this magnitude on my own (and I would be insane). If I ever have the opportunity to develop a studio or get on board with one, this would be something I'd get interested in to do.

I really think it takes people who have a love and respect for the characters and the universe to make a game successful. Creating a studio that specialized in making superhero video games would be pretty sweet.

Step 1: Search for an open world game with an SDK out on PC. Most of your grunt work will be done.

Step 2: Model new protagonist

Step 3: Get a crew together for a mod project. Slowly adding more and more.

Step 4: Do NOT use X-Men. Considering the time invested alone in this project, do your own IP. This way you're not inviting Cease & Desist orders as you get further into the project.

Shruggs, in this case you should also be playing and/or checking out "Spider-man Web of Shadows", since its essentially the same game as prototype with marvel characters instead.

From there you can get a good idea as to what the marvel super heroes and villains are like in the game. Wolverine along with many others are part of it, and its the same as prototype.

In a way, Spiderman Web of Shadows is already doing kind of what you are hoping to do.

ADD: btw when I say they are the same game, i literally mean it. Prototype copied just about everything, even the storyline to some degree, from Spider-Man Web of Shadows. The upgrade system, the city, the mechanics, the gameplay, the attacks...everything. Surprised you didnt know about it!
