Now and then i do very big scenes and I like to start a discussion of how to get best performance in the viewport / Use less RAM...I'll share my tips and hope you will do so :surprised  ;)

- Use Instance copies when possible...
- Use LOD (Level of Distance)...means...dont do highpoly modelles for something that is long out in the bagground, just model what is necessary for eyes to imagine your object.
- Use Display as box (Object properties > display as box)
- Point Chache Modifyer for mesh playback
- Also all the NVidia tricks whith Soft quadro etc. (your welcome to take this point to a higher level in this discussion)
- Use Optimize modifyer when possible (not recommended on mesh that reflect objects)
- Use Viewport clipping (I personaly never use it)
- on highpoly objects, add a Optimize modifyer and push the optimize value muts...then Right click on the Optimize bar in the Stack > Select Off en render (then it's the highres version there is renderd)

...hmmm...I've proberbly forgot to mention a few...can't remember them now...

So now I want you to post comments and of cause a h*** lot more tips...bye for now, looking forward for your answers :applause: :surprised :scream: :bounce: :wip:

Wow thanks I didn't know optimize could be turned off when rendering

That is great news

2 more things that i use all the time

- using Xref objects
- hide finished objects and check "Render Hidden" in the render dialog box (this is realy very very handy):applause: :applause:

Here's something else that will speed up performance. If you add a meshsmooth to the op of your stack, right click on it and select turn off in viewport. This will allow you to manipulate the object in it's lowpoly form while rendering in hi-poly.:p

hehe... I'd watch out for copyright infringement with that screen name :D

If you have a heavy mesh (poly) just drop a editmesh on top of it all. Super speed...

that's my nickname since 1996 i think, i use it simply everywhere ;-) am not changing it!:p :p :p

not collapsing the stack and turning off in viewport some of the mods that do not affect it much visually is my main speeder

i think a set of mods in stack uses much less memory sometimes, than collapsing it to a set of vertice coordinates? not sure about this correct me if i'm wrong

or just press the "O" key when really pushed to the wall ... but its kinda annoying, abruptly changing into boxes so i use it rarely

on meshsmooth; use the 'Render Values' (under subdivision amount) to control the meshsmooth....ex: you can have your Iterations at 0 so it won't display the meshsmooth, but it will still render correctly

Collaspsing the stack does use less memory as Max has to calculate everything thats in your modifier stack. However, turning off certain modifiers will speed things up.

Editmesh on top of the stack will cost you losts of memory. I recommend using the turn to mesh modifier.
