Hi I am working on an animation of a solar system fly thru. I need help figuring out the Parallax effect with cameras to make the planets seem farther away then they already are. I am new to max so I am not sure on how to accomplish this.

Can anyone help?

FOV (field of View) in the camera setting can make thing look near or far. if used to much things will look stretched thought.

thanks, is it posible to have different FOV settings on the same camera for multiple objects? for example I have earth up front and say mars in the back, but have mars have a FOV setting that makes it look farther away then earth?

To get the effect you're looking for, you will need to do at least two render passes. One for the background element and one for the foreground and then comp them together.

thank you for your responses! I am testing the FOV but I am not able to get the control over it as I need. It seems like such a simple operation I wonder if theres an easier way or at least a way to achieve the effect without so much composting.

here is an example of what Im looking to do... not the best example but youll get a better idea of what im going for. It looks like this person did some composting with particles. I dont really want to get into particles so hopefully i can find another method

so in testing the FOV I found that it stretches way too much around the edge of the render

I took a look at the video link and from what I can see, it looks like the person that worked on this placed a star environment background in the scene and then just placed the planets as needed. Moving the camera will give you the parallax shift that you're looking for without doing too much else. I would still recommend compositing the elements together to get more control of the lighting but if the video that you had a link to is what you want, then it's not required.

thanks marc,

Yea, so far I have the solar system completely built with the planets to scale (compared to earth) and at their respective approx. distances from the sun. the only thing is when i look at the renders of a planet... say earth, for instance... and I have venus in the background venus looks alot closer then it should be. That is why I am in search of a way to fake distance.

thanks again for your help

I was working on a similar job a couple of years ago where we had some issues with size. In the end we just scaled the objects to the size that was visually appealing using the xForm modifier and then scaled it back up when it got closer to the camera.
Here's the youtube video of one of the episodes I worked on. In a few of the shots where we wanted more distance, we did the resizing. In other shots, it wasn't so important.
